I've long thought that the depth of cueing talent in Great Britain would one day be a powerful force in the world of pool, but thus far in 9-ball, though there have been some worthy achievements, the threat of domination has not been approached.

8-ball will be a friendlier transition for the English who dominate English style 8-ball which is popular in quite a few countries.

The break being crucially important may hold some of them back.

I think we'll eventually see a good mix of countries represented in the top16. Hopefully the IPT will still be around in 5 years and the quality and depth of field will be diverse and extremely talented.

After last Eurotour in Spain, there was a big 8-ball tournament with 256 players in the final rounds ( there had already been a qualification with several hundred Spanish players before that ). Several top British players participated - Daryl Peach, Imran Majid, Tony Drago (Malta..) and others. They are certainly very good players, but did not make it to the top 8, or in any way indicate that experience from English 8-ball should give them any advantage.

I am sure the Brits can make an impact - as the best from other countries will. However, I do not believe that English 8-ball gives you an edge in "normal" 8-ball. Different games. So I don't believe they will ever dominate

Having said that, I believe that snooker players more easily can do better in 8-ball than in 9-ball. In 8-ball you do not have the kick shots, the jump shots and the safety strategy which is so unique for 9-ball. Ronnie O'Sullivan will surely be likely to be a force in 8-ball - a lot quicker than in 9-ball.

the united states of america, december 1963. young kids made snow balls and had snow ball fights, laughing and having fun in the snow. americans were depressed from kennedy recently being shot. the dick van dyke show was a hit. bye bye birdie was a smash in movie theatres. mom's everywhere had new sears washing machines. pool players started to inquire about personal custom two-piece pool cues, after watching the movie the hustler. in rock and roll, american's were losing the war. elvis was straight out of the army, and lost his pizzaz, and made horrible movies, the big bopper and others died in a plane crash. eddie cochran died in a taxi accident. studios in new york and hollywood were desperatly trying to "make" stars out of people who just were'nt. putting them in nice sweaters having them sing sweet songs. yes, my friends december 1963 americans were in a coma regarding music. enter february 1964. ah ha!! THE BEATLES! entered america and the world was never quite the same again. they had funny inteligent persoanlitys. they were loose and free. they had long cool hair. they wrote the world's greatest music. they sang harmony like gods. their songs touched you regardless of age, or backround. and after the beatles, many, many british bands came pouring in. it was to be known as "THE BRITISH INVASION" too many great bands to note here, but one thing was for sure, they brits blew away the american's at their own game! america invented rock and roll back in the late 1940'S in clarksdale mississippi. heck, at one point in 1964 the beatles had the #1 hit, all the way down to the #7 hit!!! they dominated the charts!, and #8 thru 15 was also british bands!!!
skip to december 2005. kids throwing snow balls at eachother, people are upset that there is a war going on, that is meaningless. mom's have new whirlpool or GE washers. "the king of queens" is a hit tv show. king kong the remake is making waves at the box office. and american pool players are losing. allen hopkins long has been away from the spot light, jim rempe once a "name" player has all but vanished, earl strickland, keeps beating himself.
enter february 2006 the IPT nationals 8-ball tournament. ah ha! the british strike once again! taking america by storm. not only will the top british players win consistantly, but the entire top 10 rankings will be ALL BRITISH! they have a way about them that "knocks you off your game" most 8-ball american and eurpeoun players play slowly thoughtfully and methodically, not so with the brits, they play at a pace that's whirlwind! a bullet train!!, picture this if you will, a car stopped still, and coming up next to it is a car at 185 MPH, the car that was completly still at the light has now been SHAKIN-N-STIRRED! that is what is going to happen to non-british 8-ball players!
everyone has a chance, even credence clearwater revieval, and jeffereson airplane had hits in the 1960's but mark my words, it's going to be british dominated.

I'm willing to bet that your IQ isn't higher than 30.

I am willing to bet that the UK 8-Ball players that have been accepted onto the IPT Tour will do very, very well and, unlike the original poster, I don't think they'll all make the top 10, I still think that every one of them will qualify in the top 100 - actually, let me go a step further and say top 50. There we go, something a little more realistic.

Don't get me wrong, I am not being arrogant or big-headed. So how can I say this? Simple. In the UK, 8-Ball is the pool discipline of choice by a long, long way. In fact, UK 8-Ball is played by more people and on a more regular basis than Snooker (due to there being so many tables in pubs around the country). In the the area of Scotland I live in, there are plenty of UK 8-Ball tables, but no American pool tables anywhere!

Also, I've seen most of the UK IPT players play on TV on a number of occasions over the last number of years. They all know the patterns and strategies in 8-Ball better than most of us put together (myself included in that statement). Given half a chance, they can - and will - run tables out at will and make them look easy (It's sickening!).

I agree with Colin that the break may hold a couple of them back, but I can guarantee you that they are all working on that. Some already have powerhouse breaks and none of them are alien to having to break from the centre. In fact, in one of the sets of rules used in the UK (there are 2 main sets used in the UK, but that's a very complex story and not one to bore you with here) the players are forced to break from a "D" - kinda like the one on a snooker table, only scaled down.

I very much look forward, with interest, to the first IPT event of 2006. I can guarantee that there will be a large number of people watching with interest from this side of The Pond.
