Thoughts on Loree vs Mike

Does anyone know why LJJ was chosen to play Sigel instead of Allison? I wasn't even aware that LJJ was regarded as the greatest female player of all time. Do you all think she was a good choice, and does she still even play? If so how is she playing these days? Please post your thoughts

LLJ hadn't been playing in the WPBA events and when I talked to Dawn Hopkins a while ago, she referred to LLJ as "having retired". However, there hasn't been any formal announcement to that effect.

If LLJ has removed herself from the WPBA, then Trudeau, the promoter of this event, will not have to pay sanctioning fees to the WPBA for LLJ to play this event.

I think they chose two players who have retired already. Just my opinion though.

It looks like the obvious choice to play Mike would have been Jean Balukas.

LJJ is an attractive woman, who can play pool, looks good for television and is one of the biggest names in womens pool, even today. The same for Mike Sigel. He is obviously the best between the two of them. Mike is very talkative, gets good reactions from the crowds, not to mention he is still one of the most popular pool players over the last 25 years and is a successful business person and also is good for television. They both fit the profile of what most people see on television..

If this event goes well, then most likely everyone will see, Jean Balukas, Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, Eva Laurence and so forth. The payday is just too big for any of these players to pass up. It could also be women v. women, man v. man in these big payday events.

Yes, we all would like to see a better match between todays quality players, but that is just the pool players in all of us who think that way. We have to start looking at it from an entainment point of view and build on it and hopefully by this time next year, we will be seeing current champions battling it out for a $100K and $50K prize funds, like we should have been 20 years ago!

I would have loved to have seen Jean play.

I think they chose LJJ and MS because they're both Hall of Famers and that sort of hypes the whole thing as well. IMO

Isn't Jean a Hall of Famer? I thought that she was.
The reason that I picked Jean is because of the fact that they are hyping this as "best man ever vs best woman ever". I have always heard, but have never actually seen myself, that Jean was unbeatable when in the zone. Plus, both her and Mike are retired from playing pro tournaments. Just seems like the perfect fit to me....Oh well. I will still watch Mike vs Loree and I am sure that I will enjoy it.

Yes, Jean is a Hall of Famer. Does anyone even know if Trudeau approached her? However, don't you think that if she were to play and there were commentators then they would probably talk about her quitting the WPBA like she did? BTW, she still owes them a fine for walking out on her match against Robin Dodson.

I don't think Jean wants the spotlight for playing pool anymore.

Didn't Balukas retire 20 years ago and has never played in a womens tournament since? Yes, i know she had a falling out on tv at one time. LJJ has been playing in tournaments and does so from time to time. Also, LJJ has kept her name active over the last 20 years, Balukas hasn't been heard from other than living off her "legend" status as a pool player, so LJJ is really the best choice out of the two. You also have to take into consideration how attactive LJJ is and her appearence is on tv and on magazine covers. That my seem abit shallow, but for tv producers and magazine editors, attractive people sell better.

I like the choices for entertainment value reasons, but I feel that Mike will cream her if he tries. The best loved and watched pool matches on television ever where between aging Mosconi and Fats and there must have been thousands of players who could have beaten either of them at the time of the television taping. I also feel they choose these two because they are not currently tied into any pool tour associations and could promote the new IBT(?).

I believe ..

That Jean Balukas won 19 major tournament
titles, but that Alllison is closing in on her
with about 16 or 17 currently.
