thread question

Why do some butts and shafts with the same threads not fit on the other butts? For instance, my schon shaft doesn't fit on my joss butt, but the joss shaft fits on the schon butt, and I have a predator shaft and also another joss shaft that fit on either one. But everything fits on the maintenance set that I have. I have a similar situation with a huebler, viking, and a cheap cue with a 5/16-18 pin. Have always wondered about it, thanks.

I'm not a cuemaker but I do know that my 3/8x10 break cue joint doesn't even begin to screw onto my 3/8x10 playing cue shaft.

I believe it has to do with the depth of the threads... at least that's what it is in my case. My playing cue also has a long flat-top 3/8x10 and my break cue has a short, angled top 3/8x10.

3/8" is the width of the pin and 10 is the threads per inch, so there could be several other factors that must match for a shaft from one cue to fit the base of another cue with the same type of thread.

depth of threads, angle of threads, and length of pin could all vary from one 3/8x10 pin to another, causing them all to be incompatible.

ive had that prob a few times. i just run a tap through the insert again and its on. i folnd sometimes epoxy gets into the threatd and messes things up

The Schon and Joss are 5/16-14, but the Schon's pitch diameter on the pin is a little undersized. The inserts in the shafts are slightly smaller as well, so a standard 5/16-14 pin will not thread into them, hence the Joss butt will not screw into the Schon shafts. However, the small pin in the Schon has no trouble screwing into the slightly larger insert in the Joss shaft. You may notice that it actually probably feels a little loose...a lot of play... when you screw the Joss shaft onto the Schon.

If you do that in say the Schon shaft, to get it to fit to a traditional 5/16-14 pin, then when you screw it onto the original Schon cue with the undersized pin, it will be rather sloppy.

(I'm not saying sometimes in other instances it isn't a problem like epoxy...)

Joss and Schon have different threads. By running a tap through the Schon's insert you are increasing the size and the shaft will now fit loosely on the pin. The Schon pin is slightly smaller than a 5/16X14 and uses a special tap.

.298X14, I have seen both sizes in their cues.

Thanks for the answers guys. I'm not concerned with the schon shaft not going on the joss butt, was just curious as to why it didn't work, along with the 5/16-18 stuff that has the same issues. Thanks!

Usually a Joss shaft will go onto a Schon, but a Schon shaft will not go onto a Joss. Two reasons. Schon uses a undersize 5/16-14 pin. Secondly they make their pilot larger than Joss, so it will not fit into Joss stainless joint pilot hole. Joss shaft insert fits loose on the Schon pin and the pilot is smaller than the hole in the Schon stainless joint, so even though it is sloppy it will go right on.
