is there any good tip centering tools to use without a lathe? i install tips without a lathe and just eyeball them and trim the excess. thanks,
Jay

You can try to roll up a piece of paper around the end of the shaft and ferrule to use as your guide ;)

There was a post over at CCB about this awhile back...I believe it was Spiderman's idea:

3 toothpicks taped to the ferrule, about 1/2 inch sticking up over the top of the ferrule as a guide for centering the tip. I'll see if I can find a picture...

Toothpick jig looks interesting. I do a lot of tips with slow curing glue. Here's what works for me. Two wraps of scotch tape around the ferrule to keep glue away and also as a depth guide for trimming. I then wrap masking tape to match ferrule to same diameter as the tip. Trim it all flush to end of ferrule with a sharp razor blade. Wrap a piece of cardstock around next (old photos work well). Pop in the tip and give it a good push. I use a tweeten rubber band clamp with gorilla glue, but probably not needed with super glue. Once it's dry, remove the masking tape but leave the scotch tape on while trimming. Remove the scotch tape, and use a little water with 1500 grit sandpaper to burnish tip and polish ferrule. Might sound too time consuming of a method, but I don't charge myself or my buddies labor, and every one I do comes out great. Hope this helps
