Tip glue side

Question copied from main forum http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=266032&highlight=glue+side:

I do also wonder what is the difference between the sides. Does it have something to do with pressing, glueing of the layers or the leather it self? Are there some tips that are symmetric (glue side doesn't matter) and some not?

I've also wondered about that. I know that most tanned leather products have a smooth side and the other side is rough but I imagine that that is purposely done
for a cosmetic reason. On some layered tips, especially Talisman, I had a lot of trouble with them de-laminating some years ago. Almost always it was between the third and fourth lamination where the fault occurred. I thought about gluing down the other side but just quit buying them instead.
