To Core or not to Core

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that ping.
Coring the last 6" (I think it's 6") will help reduce end mass, which reduces deflection. Predator has a patent on this. Kielwood can be more brittle than regular maple so the general advice is to not break with kielwood, especially if it's been cored.
I've personally shot with cored and uncored shafts and honestly you can "git gud" with either. Deflection isn't some scary thing, it's fairly easy to adapt to regular deflection or low deflection. It's made out to be some holy grail to have no deflection but in all honesty our muscle memory/subconscious adapts readily to either.
I happen to disagree with most pool pundits and cue makers I’ve spoken with about building a couple of KW shafts.
It’s taken longer than I initially imagined to locate a cue builder to tackle a heavier version KW shaft that needs to be
uncored and sans any weight inserts. A flat faced wood big pin KW shaft is what I want and I finally met a couple of
cue makers that have been successful at building 4+ oz. KW shafts. I just ordered a couple of KW shafts this week.
I already had a Barnhart KW shaft that absolutely made me into a big fan of KW as quick as TAOM did with V10 chalk.

My Barnhart equivalent KW (roasted maple) shaft is 29.5”, 3.81 ozs., 12.85mm, radial flat face joint.
I’ve enjoyed playing with the shaft so muchI wanted a KW that would fit my other cues. That turned
into along drawn out search that ultimately proved very successful. I wanted heavier shafts & got them.
Two weeks ago I received two flat faced KW shafts (12.75mm & 12.6mm) and no weight inserts were used.
The larger diameter KW shaft of the two weighs 4.15 ozs; the other weighs 4.0 ozs. The shafts are solid wood
& the threads are 3/8x10 & 3/8x11. These 3 KW combined allow me to use a KW shaft with the 6 cues in my case.
The cue maker is Jim Pierce who has made and sold several hundred Kielwood shaft. He can build heavier
shafts and doesn’t have to add weight to the shaft. He uses the best blanks enabling him to build and sell
KW shafts in the 4 oz. range for customers wanting this style Kielwood, like me, but without adding weight.

shafts play every bit as nice as I hoped. It’s probably because Jim has built & sold several hundred KW shafts.
