To wrap or not to wrap.... That is the question!

I am thinking about my next cue and I was wondering wether or not I want to have it wrapped. My first cue had an irish linen wrap, my current cue has a curly maple wrap and now I dont know what to do with my next cue. I like the way a wrapped cue and a wrapless cue plays, so I really dont know what to do with the next. Will there be any downside to keep changing from a wrapless to a wrapped cue, other than the fact of adjusting the grip placement. Also how is a leather wrap, how does that feel and grip? Thanks

I have leather on my playing cues. That is my preferance. Everybody like their own thing. It is up to you.

I have leather, pigskin actually, on a couple of cues, one with linen, and a couple with nowrap.
By far and away I like the leather better than linen or plain, and wrapless better than linen. I find linen too slippery. What I really like about the leather is that it gives closer to the friction of wrapless, but is a little "warmer" than wrapless.
I don't know what you'd like best. I think you should find somebody with a leather wrap and try it before you make your decision.

I have cues with pressed Irish linen and cues without wraps and I like both of them. I don't have any leather wraps, but plan to in the future!

i have high quality irish linen wrap, and prefer it over leather. leather feels just as nice, but looks worse in my opinion. as far as what you should do, i suggest you get a cue with irish linen wrap. i say this because only cheapo cues have no wrap, and people may talk, hey that guy has a cheap ass cue, i guess he can't play well. i recommend a mali F-9. this cue is so beautiful, so unbelievable, you have to see it to believe it. bocate wood, with maple in traditional pionts alternating with butterfly points!!!!! the irish linen wrap is such high quality it mimmicks a babys bottom!! go to malicloth.com click on our cues, and check out F-9, for $250 it's a steal!

What's wrong with having two cues?

One with each....

...just pick the one that plays the best TODAY!!!

Personally, I don't give a damn what anyone says about how my cue looks. I would much rather wow them with my play. I have a cue with a leather wrap, which I like a lot. I also have a cue with Irish linen. I like the leather a little more but not by much. There's no real big difference to me.

Dave Jacoby put the leather wrap on and did a fantastic job. People try to find the seam and just can't. If you're going to have leather, make sure you look at the work they do with it before you buy it. Some leather wraps don't look that good. Also, there are different types of leather. You can get a real smoothe leather or you could get one that has more of a rough surface. You probably should check out the types of leather you like.

Good luck!

Well I know that it is all personal preference in regards to how your cues but really my main concern was if there is going to be a change in playing when you switch from a wrapped cue to a wrapless cue and then back to a wrapped cue that may be wrapped with something other than what you are used to, in the case it would be leather. That is why i am indecisive about what to do with my next cue. I dont what to try something different if Im going to have to readjust everything. You will already have to break in the new cue but it would be more if you had to break in the feel of a different material. This is my concern, not aesthetics.

NOSAJ03,

I travel a lot, and have three different cue / case combos depending on where I'm going. Changing between the three, or even a house cue for that matter is mostly a mind game. If your mechanics are sound and your stroke is smooth, forget about the change and just shoot. Try not to tie any upswing or down turn in your play to a chage in equipment until you've had a lot of time to make sure the gear is responsible for the change.

Slim,

I tend to agree with you in theory, but I sure had a heck of a time adjusting to a new cue I got. I'm not trying to brag here but I play 1h and precision position play is critical. Just a little deviation in cue weight or balance can put you off cue ball control enough to drive you nuts.

Rick,

For players at the higher levels of the game, and there are many on this forum, I can see how a slight change in equipment can make a big difference in performance. As for me, I might run a full rack of straight pool once in a month, and 28 balls is my high run ever.
At my current level of play, I think the mental aspect has a lot more to do with my day to day performance than the equipment I use.

I vote for linen

I have had both wrapped and unwrapped cues, and prefer linen. I like the way it ages when it is cxared for properly. I also like the way it addes to a cue visually. I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Jones recently, and he put a new black linen wrap on my Ebony handled Blud. WOW, makes the cue look fantastic.
