TONIGHT, I SAVED 100 BABIES’ LIVES.

I had to think about that a while and when I did, it just made sense to me. I thought my days of chasing pool tournament trophies was over but there on Facebook I see an advertisement by the Kiwanis Club for a pool tournament at Lacy’s Cue in New Orleans to benefit the fight to ELIMINATE MNT (Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus).

A quick Internet search pulled up some deadly statistics and information about how a mother can pass on this painful killer to their newborn infant, who then suffers and eventually dies. Three medical shots is all that is needed to eliminate this killer at a total cost of $1.80 per mother.

Kiwanis Club and Unicef have teamed up to fight this villain and when I saw they had a pool tournament to raise money for it, I knew I had to go.
There were three beautiful trophies for the top 3 finishers so I went to the event, hoping that I might have some luck and play well. I got a little of both and finished in first place. I had to play my old buddy Steve Laney in the finals and he made a couple of costly errors and I was able to capitalize on them.

The local merchants went out of their way with sponsorships, food and over 20 raffle prizes and cash prizes as well. I liked the special salad from CRAVE, a local restaurant so much that I ate two of them. The local Kiwanis Club had grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, a few different desserts as well as various kinds of sandwiches and of course Lacy’s Cue had plenty to drink.

The tournament went off without a hitch and everyone had a great time.

Frank Haines the owner of Lacy’s Cue had volunteered to host the event at no charge and stepped up to the plate with many additional philanthropic gifts for Kiwanis. It’s nice to see pool room owners caring about their community and their community’s goals.

Hopefully, this event will become a regular event until MNT is wiped out entirely and it can be done.

There are only 18 countries left who need to eliminate this deadly and preventable illness. I plan to stay close to this and lend a hand whenever I can.

It feels good to contribute to helping babies survive in this sometimes-cruel world. I’m especially pleased to know where this help is being given.

If you see Kiwanis Club in your area, trying to take down Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus, I hope you will step up to the plate and give them a helping hand.
