Too Tight Pockets Hurt your game?

Ok, i read the post about pocket sizes and table speeds.

Now when i really started to advance my learning process and become better, alot of people talked about playing on triple shimm tables, and how much better it makes you at your game.

The pool hall i frequent now, has a 9ft triple shimm table and i have played on it a couple times, to just practice. And yes when i goto another 9ft table i find that the pockets look HUGE and i can basically make a ball at will lol jk. But i do notice on the triple shimm i cant short the pocket and do the power strokes n stuff like i can on a regular table.

The pool hall that i goto for league, has all Diamond tables, and the 9fts have the pro-cut pockets, And those pockets i dont notice any real difference between those, and a regular 9ft table pockets.

Now i dont mind having tigher pockets, but there i do think there is a point at which having pockets so tight, it will take away from your ability to improve your game. thats my 2cents

I can understand what you are saying. Very tight pockets can hurt your game. You lose the flow, the game changes to more defense etc.

i can agree too, although i would love to have a table with tighter pockets to practice on aiming, dont get me wrong not all the time, but to sharpen my aiming skills a little more, but i wouldn't like to play games on them all the time. This way playing on tables with big pockets they would look like garbage cans. Cole 'TheConArtist'

really tight tables are good for 1hole....other than that, its not very much use for them.

IMO the optimal practice table lets you get two balls in mouth of the pocket, but they get stuck before they can fall. this is tight enough to keep you on your toes and not so tight that you can't cheat the pocket, and really stroke the ball. it also allows for a happy medium for you to adjust between caverns and tiny little holes for pockets.

it doesn't hurt to practice on really tight tables every now and then, but a better alternative if you're going to own a table is to get the pockets the above mentioned size, and just put in pocket reduces when you're trying to perfect you precision aim.

thanks

I thought you said you already had an aiming system.

I think standard pockets are great for confidence. Tight pockets are great for getting your stroke true. You can mentally adjust and still fire balls in on a tightly shimmed table. I wrote a post about this before, unfair pockets ruin the fun. Pockets that are shimmed incorrectly that reject balls because of pocket fault are very bad. They ruin confidence and destroy your stroke. I played on a triple shimmed table in Tampa Fl that played beautifully, on the other hand I've played on shimmed tables that played horribly.

My vote is tight tables do not ruin your stroke, it helps fine tune it by getting the glitches out..

Super tight equipment helps your accuracy, stroke, and pattern play. It can also hurt your confidence. Some people might disagree about tight equipment helping your stroke, but it really does. It teaches you how to get more action out of the cueball with less force. Hit a ball too hard and it wont go in. If you learn that nice smooth and quick accelerating stroke instead of the muscling stroke for power shots, you will be hitting the ball like the pros do. Notice they never slam a ball, even on power shots. It doesn't even seem like they are hitting the ball that hard. They can do more with the cueball with less effort, which is where the saying 'less = more' comes from. It helps your pattern play because you have to play stronger and more precise position, you can't be leaving yourself those 5 degree angle shots where you have to slam it to get shape. If tight equipment doesn't hurt your confidence and make you not want to play the game anymore, then it's good for you. If it does hurt your confidence, stay on bigger pockets until your game improves.

That is an excellent point, cue ball movement through a better stroke. That is so correct. Many times I have seen players who can make most any shot, but their cue ball is violent. Tight pockets would definitely get them into a more fluid stroke with a much better cue ball.

I agree the pockets have to be fair. I’ve experienced the same problems, what’s kinda funny is that sometimes only one pocket is totally out of whack and the others are fair. That often makes certain shots avoided when playing to that pocket.

Very funny. :(

How do I measure the pocket size?

From where the rail points first turn into the pocket, 1" in from there, from a perpendicular point where the slate first ends, where the rubber ends on the wood?? I have no idea.

Diamond Pro Cut pockets actually have bigger pocket openings if you measure from the tits of the pocket and the same size opening if you measure the tits at the back. The reason they are harder to pocket on is that they reject balls easier. If you hit it into the pocket facing on a pro cut table at high speed it will not go in as easily.

tight pockets changes the way i shoot, ie my mechanics. therefore, i think it serves no purpose.
