Tenon threaders are much different from metal dies. Metal cutting dies will eat up the wood and cue tenon threaders will do the job right. Taps that Atlas sells are longer and have under cut shanks so you can tap deeper. Most are also special threads that you will not find at a hardware store.

Atlas taps are generally longer and have a reduced shank which allows you to tap deeper. Also some cue tap threads are special thread patterns, and can't be found in the stores, as where others are somewhat standard. You can supliment with some store bought taps but not all of them, and for some operations It will still require a tap that can go deeper. Just a couple standard threads off the top of My head are- 5/16-18, joint thread or ferrule thread. 3/8-16 for weight bolts or connecting pins. One of the insert taps I think is standard too. It depends on how deep You need to go for what will work, and what won't. There are other sources online for taps, altough I have been happy with most any taps I have purchased from atlas also. The joint dia I have had luck with but not the ferrule dia, altough atlas use to sell another one by unique out of steel instead of aluminum, and that one works really well for me.:)
