Tournament/league distractions

I was having trouble concentrating on my practice on my home table. I am sure the competition is part of that but yesterday I found out another reason.

Coming from a barroom background and then our apa league matches where there is a lot of noise and movement between tables, wait persons bringing food, drinks, etc, I found that I was used to that environment.

I have found that when I practice in that type of environment where there is background music, talking and people moving about, my concentration is better. I realized this yesterday when I practiced at a pool room during the lunch rush.

For me it is part of the whole environment and when it was taken away ie at my home, my concentration suffered.

In the last falcon tour event in Rockville, MD, there were people at the bar watching football and yelling, people moving all around and there was actually a speakerover our table which my hubbie said was noisy. So many were complaining about the noise. This really bothered my opponent to the point that she went to the bar during the match (asked me first if I minded) but I never really heard it. I guess it is just all I have ever known.

Are most people bothered by these distractions in competitions or are some of you like me, actually needing it to focus?

I install my teenage sons with the PS2 in the living room when I want to practice. They generate enough noise to simulate a crowded bar. :)

Honestly, though, it doesn't bother me either way. It's harder to concentrate with the noise, but easier to find loud places to play, so you get more practice. I play most of my matches in a noisy room, anyways, and there's no practice like match practice.

Alone, in a quiet room, it's just me and the balls. Regardless of whether there are more people in the room or not.

I dont think my concentration level suffers when I play in a bar that is noisy or at home where it is quieter. I usually have something jamming on the stereo at home anyways.

Noise level is only a problem while you are shooting if you are keying in to it. Try to tune it out, then noise level wont be significant.
In a bar, the only thing that distracts me are the fine ladies running around these days:D .
At home, I usually suffer from lack of interest in practicing after a while, then I start just banging them around, shoot horrible, and quit for a while cause I know I can do better. I think the boredom of playing the ghost is more distracting than quietness.

I find that noise doesn't affect my concentration at all, whether it's silent or there's a crowd of 100 plus people yelling the only thing on my mind is within those four rails. It's usually easier (for me) to shoot in a silent atmosphere because there are no possible distractions but then again how often does the opportunity come up to play a real match in a "silent atmosphere"
LOL!

Bob agrees with this. We have 4 different size tables at home and he never plays on them. He would rather go of to our local small, smoke infested, for deaf people only establishment and practice.

He can completely block everything out at the bar, yet at home if one of the kids or I am trying to get other things done he can't concentrate.

Haven't played any tourneys in a silent environment. So concentrating in a pub is not a problem for me. If its just a constant drone of bar noise then its perfectly fine, and easy to tune out. Its just sometimes sudden loud noises when taking a stroke that can cause a distraction, such as a bottle smashing, or the guy on the next table cursing and slamming his cue on the table, hehe.

I have found to be able to concentrate well when there is silence. Music doesn't bother me at all, even if it's louder.

What bothers me most is constant talking by the people close to the table...especially those commentating the footbal game on tv! Cell phones ringing all the time also pisses me off...

There are only one or two REALLY IRRITATING people who can annoy me enough to affect my game. Aside from that, I tend to be able to block the rest out.
