trends in joint/shaft setups

With the trend tword more joints being larger(3/8-10 , 3/8-11 ,3/8-14 , radial) pins that thread directly into the wood on the shaft will this affect the life of the individual shaft assuming care is taken not to crossthread, stored properly, etc.? It only seems natural that a shaft with a brass insert would wear or loosen up less but i certainly am not a woodworker or machinist. One of the forum contributors(Jerry from Black Heart, i think) suggested occasionally using carnuba based auto paste wax inserted into the threads to keep them tight. Is there any long term drawback to this method of maintenance? With the conversations i hear about the increasing difficulty in getting quality shaft wood i just wondered if if the newer joints will intensify the demand through shorter shaft life? Thanks,Mike S.

There is no reason for a non-insert shaft not to last as long as a shaft with an insert if any kind of care is taken when assembling the shaft to butt. About 10 years ago I bought an old McDermott "C" model with three shafts that hadn't been played with for awhile. I had to open the treads in the shafts up a little as they were way to tight to easily put together.
If the threads are ever stripped out of a shaft then any competent cue-mechanic can repair them.
