Triangular Vs quadrangular cushions

Hello
I'm going to put here the following question.
I'm a 3 cushion player in a small club in Portugal, where we have 4 Chevillotte Europa 3 cushion tables. The Chevillotte table are selled with triangular cushion, and the other brands with whom i've made some contacts are selled with quadrangular cushions. The "small" billard player that plays in those tables don't like them and their explination is that the cushion is not correct, it should be quandrangular. In that small club great players have already played there, Dany Sanchez, Saigyner, Van Kuyk, Stroobants, Tasdemir, Nelin, Polycronopolos, and i never heard from none of them a single complain about the tables (maybe they are too small).
I've already changed e-mails with Mr. Christophe Chevillotte about this same subject, and his answer was that the triangular cushion has more potential to do different things.
Can anybody give me a proper explication about this matter.

thank you

Hello Francisco,

I'm not a table mechanic. Just an avid fan like yourself. Below is from wikipedia explaining the construction of the table and differences in the games. Please see the section about the rail profile for carom table.
---------
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billiard_table

The profile of the rail cushion, which is the cushion's angle in relation to the bed of the table, varies between table types. The standard on American pool tables is the K-66 profile, which as defined by the BCA has a base of 1 3⁄16 inches and a nose height of 1 inch.[4] This[clarification needed] causes the balls' rebound to be somewhat predictable during game play.
On a carom table, the K-55 profile is used (with a somewhat sharper angle than pool cushions). K-55 cushions have cloth, usually canvas, vulcanized into the top of the rubber to adjust rebound accuracy and speed.[4]
Finally, snooker tables may use an L-shaped profile, such as the L77 profile.[5] This is mostly[clarification needed] because snooker uses balls of a smaller diameter and smaller pocket entrances than pool does.
-----------
I hope this helps. The wrong profile on the rail can affect the reaction of the balls if they are regulation dimensions.

Hello Scratch
Thank you for your reply. It´s my believe that in 90% of the cases, the players that don't like the tables/cushions are the loosers, because when the same players win they don't say nothing. I personally there are some characteristics in the Chevillotte table that i like but there are other characteristics that i don't like. Overall it's a good table.

Happy new year

cushion differences

Francisco, both the triangular and the quad cushions meet the playing specifications for all carom games. There are differences between them that really relate only to response of the cueball depending on speed and angle. Triangular cushions tend to make a table play a little shorter because the ball makes a bigger dent in the cushion -- but that can be compensated by adding a slight amount of spin to the cueball which then adds a little width to the angle coming off the rail. I personally prefer quad rubber because I believe I can make the rail cloth tighter when I recover a table and the tightness of the rail cloth is far-and-away the biggest factor in how fast or long a table plays.

Aren't triangular cushions specifications used in international competitive play?

Hello Scratch and Kilby
As far as I know, in three cushions there's no specifications for triangular or quadrangular. Chevillotte is the only brand who uses triangular cushion in their tables, and I've already seen several international competitions with Chevillotte tables.

Kilby, you are absolutely correct in your appreciation, but please let me add one more thing, when the shot is made with only 3 cushions, the reaction of the table is very much what you described, but when the shot has 4 or more cushion there's a great lost of effect, and a change of trajectory in the shot by consequence.

Thank you by your replies
