Hi !

I am wondering what does a Tim Scruggs Cue feel/hit as compared to an Ariel Carmeli? In terms of stiffness and feedback ..

Aslo, how well does a TS cue play, are the cues consistent and does TS typically core his cues?

Thanks!

I play with a Scruggs cue with a 5/16x14 stainless joint. It plays great, extremely consistent. I have tried almost every top cuemaker's cue and can't stop playing with my Scruggs. call Timmy or Mike @ 410-247-1231 to ask questions about the construction of their cues. Pete Omen's cues play good but different. The Omen cues that i had are gone but i still have my Scrugg's cues. Hope that helps, Bob C.

I agree with Bob above. I just took in a TS cue with the SS 5/16 x 14 joint also and it plays awesome. Very consistent. The cue is so well balanced I can hardly tell the cue is in my hand. As Bob suggested, I would give Tim a call and have him build you exactly what you want.

Good luck!

You'll want to remain aware that Gilbert & Scruggs make cues with various joint types. Two cues, identical in every other way, one with a 5/16-14 pilot & one with a flat face radial pin joint, will play & feel VERY different from each other. Any of these guys can make you a great cue, but you have to know where you want to start, or you'll wind up with a great cue you don't play well with.
I'll put a plug in here for Jeff Olney, too. You can't get a better playing cue, and you'll pay a lot less.

thanks mdavis!

so how do u think a 5/16-14 plays and feel differently frm a radial flatface?

my feel is that flatface has more vibrations and feel than 5/16-14

what u all say??

thanks!

I have both. I feel the flat flace joint provides more feel with a tad less harder hit then the other, but the 5/16-14 hits great too.

You're asking questions that nobody can answer - for you. Hit & feel are subjective, and how well a cue plays for you (and vice versa) have so much to do with your own style, shot selection, game of choice, tip position eccentricity, willingness to adapt to a different joint type / shaft taper / balance point / etc, etc...
Try to hit with as many different cues as you can via friends, supply stores, etc. If you're able to chalk up, try some of the type of shots that highlight the "life" in a cue for you, and how much adjustment is required for your desired results - but try & be consistent or you won't learn much.

I've collected many cues, but when it comes to league nights i only have SCRUGGS or COCHRAN in my cue case.

I have seen a vast range of hits among Scruggs cues. Guy Crunch had a super fancy ivory sleeved 6 pointer that had one of the best hits I ever experienced. I have also felt Scruggs cues that, to me, were entirely too stiff. I believe Mr. Scruggs can build any kind of hit his customer desires into his cue.

That being said, most of the Scruggs cues I have used or owned (maybe a dozen or so) hit very stiff and far more so than the Carmelli cues I have used. Ariel's cues are stiff too, but I have found his cues to be more lively and have more feedback to the player. It's just my opinion.

Given the choice between the two, Scruggs makes cues that resell better, but I would prefer Carmelli personally. I have never been disappointed with the playability of any of Ariel's cues.

If I were to buy a Scruggs, I would hit with it first to confirm that I like it. If I were ordering a cue, I would be clear with Mr. Scruggs what likes I have before ordering...again, I believe he can do anything you want...but he must first know what you are looking for exactly.

For the most part

If you were to tape over the joint of a Scruggs or Cochran you would not be able to tell what type joint you are playing with. Mike did just this once and took a Scruggs cue to a big tournament and had every one that wanted to try hit a few and guess the joint type. They were all players and they guessed every type of joint and pin combination imaginable.
They do have perfect balance. They do hit with incredable consistancy. The workmanship is flawless. Your jaw will drop when you try one for the first time.
Before you even approach your shot you will feel the cues solid construction in your hands.
Nick :)
