turn down a shaft question

1) when you turn down a shaft what is the maximum you should take off?(ie .25mm, .5mm, .75mm)

2) how long between turns? 1 month or more?

3) is sanding the most used method for this?

It depends how much smaller you want to turn your shaft. Sanding is never the way to go unless you are wanting to remove very little. If some one wants less than a .250mm removed then I will sand on a wood lathe. any more than that then I remove the tip, put in a new center on both ends and run through my tapering machine. When a shaft is spinning in a lathe it will whip a little on one side of the shaft which causes the sand paper to remove more material on that side. If you try to remove too much then the shaft will roll as if it has a warp, which actually it doesn't but try relating that to someone.

thank you dick,

the shaft is 13mm and his old cue is 10.5mm so it looks like a club side by side. he does not like the fat shafts. he said 12mm would be better, so that is what i am aiming for. i do not have a taper machine, so i just have to sand it down...slowly. that is why i was asking how long between turns. figuring i was going to take a 1/4mm at a time.
