O.K.........................I give ................why is the building that the U.S. Open is held in being Evacuated by order of the city?

Also................why is play "tentative" to resume friday?

Curious

That's a good question and I don't have the answer. I would like to know if they are planning to mandate evacuation of any other buildings such as Q-Masters. That would really slow down the action on Thursday.

Of course, they could just tell everyone to hit the road but that would cause some problems. The Convention Center looks like a fairly safe building if you stay away from the windows. In fact, I would think it might make a good place for people to hole up in for the storm. Maybe sleep on the tables.

The answer may be that people in authority need to exercise that authority in order to justify their big salaries.

The last hurricane we had in CT the power was out for about a week. If that happens at the Open that might put a crimp in Friday's play. I don't think there are any windows in the tournament room

Actually Ken, you answered my question.

Guess I have been living under a rock.

I had not heard of the hurricane in that area until your post.

Seems they are predicting Isabel to go away by friday.

Thanks again,

The US Open has been having trouble for the last few years and it's a shame. People want to blame Barry for the trouble, but 99% of it has been out of his control. One thing I have learned about him & the US Open is that it will survive. When all these bad rolls that the US Open has been getting go away I hope to see the biggest & brightest in it's future(they deserve it!).

Between the US Open and personal matters we all know that Barry knows how to survive. Anyone with that much love for the game of pool should deserve everyones respect.

I believe there are general evacuation orders for that area. I suppose the owners of the building do not want to be responsible for the people in it so to be on the safe side they tell them to get the heck out.

If there is much damage to the area come Friday, like loss of power, then the problem will be that the police will block off the roads and prevent people from returning. Hopefully that will not happen. But that is why locals are reluctant to evacuate unless they really have to because after it is over there is a delay in getting back to their homes.

Is the Holliday Inn next to the convention center remaining open?

According to Barry last night there is a "POOL PARTY" all night long at Q Masters Wednesday night. I guess that is one way to wait out the storm is via a pool room with lots of action......the sad thing is some of the vendors and players have chose not to come back on Friday. so with the already low field of 160 some players it will go a bit faster after play is resumed i suppose.
The best thing everyone can do is continue to support the tournament and Barry NO MATTER WHAT DISASTER happens

The Holiday Inn building is adjacent to the Chesapeake Conference Center, where the tournament is being held, with only a parking lot between the two buildings.

The lobby of the Holiday Inn has been cleared out, and many single cots have been brought in to prepare for the storm. Folks who were staying on the first floor were asked to move from their room to a room higher in the building.

The hotel manager said that as long as authorities say the hotel can remain open, then the guests can remain here and seek shelter. However, if the storm turns out to be too much, everyone will be evacuated from the Holiday Inn and placed at a location, I guess, to be determined.

Many folks are going to the grocery stores purchasing flashlights, water, and handheld radios.

The town has been ordered to shut down at 11:00 p.m. tonight, in anticipating of Isabel's grand entrance.

Q-Masters pool room will be open, and many pool players plan on hanging out there, but I heard that the pool room has no generator and has been known to have outage problems during storms. Can't shoot pool in the dark. I am thinking it would be better to stay put in your comfortable hotel room, rather than risk getting stuck at a dark pool room.

Today is a beautiful day with the sun shining brightly and warm southerly winds. I guess this is what they call the calm before the storm.

All tournament matches will begin Friday, as long as there is electricity. Many vendors did pack up and leave today, as did some pool players.

Better to be safe than sorry! Us southerners are use to the big storms, and having to scatter out for the Hurricanes every few years. I hope this one just falls apart and goes back out to see.............Don't Isabel know the US OPEN is trying to go on!!:D

This letter was just sent to all Holiday Inn guests.

Dear Valued Guests: As you are aware, Hurricane Isabel is projected to impact the North Carolina/Virginia area sometime around Thursday, September 18, 2003.

If you do choose to remain in the hotel, the possibility of the following conditions may exist: the elevator may be out of service; there may be no electricity or running water; food service may be very limited or nonexistent; and maid service and room service will not be available.

You should be aware of the following: smoking will not be permitted anywhere in the hotel becuase of possible gas leaks, use of candles will not be permitted anywhere in the hotel, there may be limited food and drinking water available, bathtubs should be filled with water; serious flooding may occur, there may be no access to the first floor and exits, due to the drop in barometric pressure, a car window should be left open slightly to prevent damage, the nearest primary shelters are....

Rember: Stay away from windows. In the event of high wind, close drapes in your room to protect from flying glass, utilize your bathroom for shelter.

No evacuation notice has been issued at this time. In the event that a mandatory evacuation notice is issued, everyone will need to leave the hotel and seek shelter in the nearest evacuation shelter. We can have no exceptions to that. We will keep you updated.

Geesh, no wonder folks are packing up and leaving. ManlyShot is sticking it out and hopes to post an update after the storm.

Open/ Isabel

I must agree- Barry deserves kudos for sticking with the 'open.

I also wonder WTF Isabel is thinking re: timing.

Here it is Friday, the morning after the Tropical Storm Isabel. She sure did try to mess things up for our U.S. Open.

The latest is that Barry is trying to locate a generator. The Holiday Inn is the only building within 10 miles of here that has power which is generated by a HUGE generator. The staff at the Holiday Inn in Chesapeake Beach has bent over backwards to accommodate its guests. I cannot say enough wonderful things about them. It has really made the difference here.

Hopefully, when a generator is located, the Chesapeake Conference Center will be able to have lights and the show will go on. Until then, it is a wait-and-see type thing.

A lot of pool players who were staying at other hotels in the area are packing up and coming to the Holiday Inn.

All of us here owe a great deal of thanks to Holiday Inn and Barry Behrman for their constant and continuous efforts to keep our U.S. Open ship afloat.
