So over the thanksgiving break i got a request to dissect a UltraSkin soft tip.
Here are the results and the pictures.
First i cut the tip in half to see the inner layer consistency. I figured that this will be a much truer way of checking layer construction adhesive thickness and so on.
The layers were even in the center and there were no gaps. Since this is a soft tops the compression of the leather is minimal so the tip looks very fibrous. The fibers are long and well intertwined denoting a high quality leather similar to kamui/blackheart/tad and other high end tips.
The tips is very soft in my opinion softer then a kamui soft if you ever experienced one. The chalk retention is very good and i find myself often not chalking for 2 to 3 shots before re-applying chalk even with the plain blue diamond.
I have not played with this tip long enough to see and mushrooming but i will keep you guys posted on any findings.
I trimmed down my tip to 4 layers and it plays very well.
I have different styles of play depending how i feel that day and how the table reacts. I can move the cue ball with power and very little spin (ultraskin h and hh are good for that, plus this style is beneficial for me on a barbox with a pro-taper shaft) or i can move the cue ball with spin and low speed (ultraskin medium and soft, used on 9 ft as well as barbox with good quality cloth).
For the price these tips are a real contender and anyone interested should contact tom and try some.
I am trying real hard to find something wrong with these tips so i don't look like i am kissing butt and making favorites but i one found one problem.
They do not burnish on the sides to the glass like look of kamui. That is the only issue. Some people that had kamui in the past do associate that high gloss with high quality but i believe it is stupid.
I personally never managed to get them to shine but again i am pretty broke so i don't not have access yet to higher end polishing compounds.
For all the people that will try to disprove my findings i would like them to remember that i am not perfect, i am new at this and still learning and perfecting my methods. If you can help do it if not step aside and don't throw rocks.
and now for the sweet pictures.
