I had a long talk with Gary, the owner of Solarez, and the guy that actually does the formulations of their products, this past week and came away with a couple items worthy of sharing
1) I know there are a lot of complaints on the smelliness of the polyester gloss. He explained that it is due to the styrene in the formula and Upon request of the customer, They can make your order with a suffocating ingredient that stifles the styrene odor. He stated that when you open the container, there should be almost no odor until you disturb the finish, like stirring it or applying it. After application and the finish flows out, the smell should go away again. He said you can put your nose to it and not smell it. If you do like I do and run a fan in the booth blowing outside, it should reduce the smell to only a couple minutes total.
2) They will be offering a water-based UV finish shortly, hopefully within a couple months. It is commercial grade, similar to what large companies use when making furniture. Once applied, the water will need to evaporate for about 10-15 minutes and then hit it with UV. Sounds promising.
