Using Exotic Material for Joints and Ferrules

I've started using elk horn and buck horn for different accents in cues but I just had a ferrule come back from cracking. Does it matter where you take the material from on the horn (i.e. main beam vs. tip of the points)? I've noticed that there is a difference in the way the material looks on the inside from these two places on the horn. Has anyone else worked with these materials?

BTW the horns were fresh sheds picked up in the wild, not something cut off a rack from last years kill.

I always use the smallest size i can turn round for ferrules,lot less of the pithy stuff,as far as cracking a lot of things could cause that,too green,moisture,humidity,ive had a couple crack over the yrs but not many

Dip the end is stain or white pain something of an off color then face off until the color goes away. If the color doesn't go away the piece is not solid and probably should not be used in a structural area. JMHO
