Where did Spain, Balabushka, Szamboti, Meucci, Paradise, Palmer, Viking, Joss, National, etc. get their veneer stock from back in the early days of cue building? And did they dye their own veneer?

Also where else besides Prather, Atlas, Cue Veneers can wood veneers be found for cue building? It seems to be only a few sources now.

Thanks for your reply. However Hightower has very limited choices. And I'm still curious on where the cuemakers from the 60's got their veneers.

You can try to ask Barry Szamboti,
He posts here on az, occasionally
szamboti is Barry's user name here m

I don’t think that G Balabushka made any forearm blanks himself - he bought from Spain and others and used Titilist forearms- I could be wrong on this.

Wood river offered Poplar and Sycamore. I still have some of thier stock.
Constantines was another source. Colors were very limited back then compared to what's offered today.

I would figure that any source that the greats sourced wood from are long gone. Wood today isn't the same as years ago. Most wood today is farmed, In that era is was old growth.

There are rumors that he did make some blanks, but for the most part, what you wrote is generally believed to be the case. I had a Bushka with a Gus blank. Similar quality to today's top makers but I couldn't get use to that thick butt.
