Verdict: Was the Southern Classic a success?

There was a lot of talk before the event about importance of this event being a success, perhaps laying the foundation for a pro tour. I wasn't there and I didn't catch as much of the streaming coverage as I would have liked, but I loved everything that I was able to see.

Pro events:
Was turnout at the pro events above/below expectations?

Amateur events:
How about the amateur events?

10 foot Diamonds:
Sounds like the 10 footer event was very popular? Agree/disagree?

Action:
Didn't hear as much about action like you do at the DCC. Was it just more offline than normal?

Vendors:
How did they do?

I love the DCC format and would love to see it expand, although I think you could change the banks event to 8 ball and it wouldn't hurt turnout whatsoever (perhaps make it more appealing to the masses?).

Subscribing to this thread because I didn't have the time to follow this as much as I'd wanted.

What the little I've seen definitely did is make me wish I had a 10-foot Diamond at home…

(Side note: Dave Barenbrugge spells his name without double-"R".)

Cheers!

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

No doubt it was a success. Anyone who thought it would rival the DCC the FIRST year just hasnt followed pool. There has never been a pool 'Extravaganza' that did gangbusters the first year. To Wit-Galveston, The Masters, The Million Dollar shootout, The Expo part II and many more.

You have to crawl before you walk and with approx 150 Players in each event and the apparent success of the streaming, it certainly exceeded my expectations anyway. It did surprise me that they seemed to be behind schedule from the start.

I dont think the 10B event can be expanded further without detriment to the main tournament. 3.5 hrs to 5 hrs per match is tooooooooooo long for fans and players especially when it is squeezed into the rest of the tournament. How would you like to play a 4 hr+ match, then a race to 7 and then back to another 4-5 hr set on the final days of 9 days of pool and then have to get up early to play the next day? I also dont see the reason to double the entry fee next year for the 10B to $2K. Id like to see races to 11 in the 10B also. JMO and im sure not too popular.

The matches on the 10-footer were all very exciting. IMO though, the races should be a race to 11. Danny Di said that the better player will come up on a 10-footer on a race to 11 and that the race to 15 is not that necessary. I agree with him. It's too long a match...

southern classic

I think it was a success I was there 5 days the 10 ball was a little long but grate to watch . I saw plenty of action and hope it returns next year

Excellent

I thought it was great, i enjoyed watching the banks and one pocket since you dont get to see it as often. I also enjoyed the 10 foot tables with reasonably tight pockets much better than 9 foot with "too tight" pockets

I was a little bothered by the number of freezes on the accu-stat stream but write it off to their bandwidth at the venue and the high number of viewers.

The previous suggestions of a race to 11 would be better, maybe add in the win by 2 and then sudden death after 24 games like some other venues, maybe a longer race in semis and final

Also, as an east coaster that can't fade the 2 am matches, looping reruns the following morning like TAR does would be appreciated

I would consider driving up and spending the week in the hotel in the future as well.

STREAMING

I was going to head over there but one I saw that I could watch great matches from the event right here at home, this is were I stayed.

I wonder how many people also stayed home and watched the live-streaming instead?

Obviously I stream pool events. I also watch a lot of pool. It's great to have a window into the event that allows me to see "some" of what's going on but it makes me want to be there to see everything. It's a teaser. A really good one too.

I was there for the first 7 days before having to leave. It was awesome to be able to watch the finals from the house.

If you were close enough to drive there and didn't, you missed out. Period.

I had a great time and really hope it continues. I was there Saturday through Wednesday. Hope to make this a yearly trip.

I was there covering the part of the action from the amateur arena.

Overall I had a good time and am optimistic for the future. I believe everyone learned a lot this year and the next one will be exponentially better.

For a first time event I give it an 8.

I watched the insidepoolmag stream so I mostly just seen the 10B witch I enjoyed.

Mostly I had no Idea what was going on with the regular tourneys (8B,1P,9B).If there were online brackets I never found them.

I think the 10B being played on 10' tables drew allot of interest to the event.

I will try to make it to the Classic (someday),it is on my list.

For 5 of the 6 streamed 10-foot 10-ball matches I watched, the player who got to 11 first also got to 15 first.

The exception was Strickland vs. Van Boening. Shane was ahead 11-9 but lost 14-15.

I think these sorts of issues, if/when corrected, could help make these major events a lot better. Folks know there was a big event this past week, but if they have to work to find any news or results from the event, it will take away much of the impact.

Fortunately, this problem is a relatively easy one to fix, compared to many other possible issues an event of this nature can run into. Hopefully these folks will recognize the problem (and the opportunity) and take better measures next time around.

I agree. The tournament was a great success but I think the race to 15 took a little bit of the excitement away. I think a race to 11 is enough.

There was most definitely action!

One major problem is that the action room and amateur events are so far away from the pro events, you really have to choose to be one place or the other.

Other than Hustlin USA, I can't imagine the vendors did too well because most of the people that spend money were in the Pro event and mostly players were in the building with the vendors.

Action

I saw a lot of little action going on. We were only there Fri night but stayed late. Drank till about 12 on Sat morning. played iba on the 10 footer, and jpowell on the 7 ft. Met lots of azbs and saw some friends from other places. The oklahoma boys seemed to be mixing it up as usual. every table seemed to have something going on. We watched the Johnny / Alex 10 ft match then went back and forth from the casino to convention. Drank way too much and was sick from sat at noon when I quit drinking till well still don't feel good.Me and IBA ate great at Texas de Brazil in Memphis. Great trip.

Please elaborate

It did surprise me that they seemed to be behind schedule from the start.

Surprised by this comment since tournament started exactly at 2:00 pm on Friday as scheduled and every round in every event was drawn and started on schedule as posted. With 150 players each event only took 12 or 13 rounds to complete where the overall schedule was based on the Derby City format that takes 15 or 16 rounds to complete an event. Basically, each event ran well ahead of its schedule because of the higher tables to players ratio.

What part, other than the amateur events, do you feel were behind schedule?
