Viattorre/Dominiak

Hello, I've been a viewer of this forum and I must say I enjoy reading them, they are quite entertaining and informative. I registered today to get some input (I see these types of posts all the time but one more can't hurt). I want a cue made with 2 shafts for under $500 and I like the look of the DW 1009 from Dominiak and from what I've read Viattorre are nice cues but there is no pricing info on their website. I sent an info request but its the weekend I guess I shouldn't expect to get a reply until Monday. I don't know how much I can get a Viattore for (the design I want is similar to Efren's break cue, ebony and maple, not that fancy but looks beautiful) but I would like your opinions and recommendations, Viattorre or Dominiak? Also I've been looking at bcmcue.com, any info and opinions would be greatly appreciated. And does anyone know who made Efren Reyes cues?

Thanks

I just called Jackson today and he said his computer is down at the moment. Im currently having a bocote plain jane with 2 shafts made. You will definitely be able to get a cue of Efren's specs with 500 dollars including shipping and maybe even ivory ferrules. Efren plays with a judd jt1 if im not wrong. You might want to contact Zim to have more information on the Dominiak cues.

I have a few Viattorre cues and I can tell you that they are very, very good cues. My collection of cues is very diverse...I have quite a few American made custom cues, a few Philippine custom cues, and some U.S. production cues (vintage and modern).

I'm not really sure what Efren's break cue is, most of the time he breaks with his playing cue. :) Efren is currently using a Judd cue (JT-1) and the shaft of this cue is most likely one of his old, "bowling alley lane" shafts made by Jessie (retired Philippine cue maker).

Dominiak's are nice cues...have tried out a couple.

In any eventuality, either cue would be good. I would give Viattorre the edge because of the superb finish and excellent playability.

I have a couple of Viattorre cues and love them both. I love the fact they take many steps to ensure the best built cue money can buy. You can definitely get a plain cue with 2 shafts for less than $500. I paid less than $600 for one of mine and I got points and some inlays. Jackson's also a really great guy to do business with and not a jerk like many of the other cuemakers I inquired with.

I'm going to ask a question here that may seem absurd, but what the Hell. My wife and I were shopping for furniture one time, and she loves oriental decor. So, we went to this place that imports furniture from Asia. I noticed that almost all of the furniture was warped and the wood just looked awful. The people at the store told us that this happens all the time because there is such a fluctuation in humidity from Asian countries and the US. They also said that they have a master craftsman that refinishes the peices once you buy them to restore them to their original condition. Given this, is there any danger this might happen to a cue that is made over there? I was in the Philipinnes and I know first-hand how hot and humid it is there.

I just asked the person I have chosen to build my cue the same question and Im waiting on his response.

That was one of the main concerns I had since I kept hearing horror stories from a few people in this and other pool boards about cues made there warping. I asked Jackson about this and he told me he only uses properly seasoned and dried woods and takes every precaution to prevent warpage. I've had my Viattorre for almost 6 months now and it hasn't warped yet. I figured if it was going to warp it would have started already.

Cues from over seas!

Yes folks, your taking a chance buying a cue that was built over seas.

Warpage is a problem to all cue makers. We do all we can to prevent it happening to our cues.

If you buy from over there, who is going to back it up when warpage or other problems occur?

Buy American, support your brothers, sisters, kinfolks, and all AMERICANS.

You got way the best of it with American made goods. You might pay a little more, but it's worth it in the long haul.

DOMINIAK'S are MADE IN AMERICA!!!
I personally sell and collect both custom and production cues and I prefer to play with a Dominiak (so far)! I play with a 1009 model with the Dominator shaft. The Dominator shaft is similar to the 314 construction but is made of 8 pieces instead of the 10 that Predator uses. I have a couple Dominiak 1009's and a Plane Jane in stock. Email me for photos and info about them.

Thanks,
Zim

It doesn't matter much to me where the cue is made, the reason why I am considering the Viattorre is that I've read only positive things about Viattorre cues the people on this forum and other forums seem to just praise Viattorre cues and from what I see it fits in my budget. One of you said that Jackson's computer is down so I guess he hasn't gotten my email but can someone post Viattorre's phone contact if thats cool. I really like the look of the DW1009, ebony/curly maple and ebony/tulipwood. I've heard enough good things about Viattorre cues and Dominiaks alike so really its just about price for me right now. I was going to order a Dominiak cue before and I spoke to Bill Dominiak but I wasn't sure cuz I didn't know of anyone playing with his cues and I didn't want to spend $500 just because I saw a pretty picture but now I think I'm ready for my first custom cue just gatta make up my mind between the two as soon as I get a reponse from Jackson I'll make up my mind and let u guys know which one I went with. Thanks for the input.

That's probably one of the reasons I didnt recommend just any cuemaker. Jackson of Viattorre is arguably one of the Philippines' best cuemakers...and is a pleasure to deal with.

I am certain that he will back up his products. As for warpage, I havent experienced any problems with my Viattorre cues yet...and I hope it doesnt happen, but if it does, I am very sure that Jack will be around to help.

As for the wood Jack uses in his cues, well, a lot of it is purchased from suppliers over in the U.S. And I can tell you that he uses very high quality wood.

As for American cuemakers, well, I have had some problems with shafts warping as well... and I had to get replacement shafts from them.

So, warpage, whether it be from U.S. made cues...or Philippine made cues, goes both ways.

Hi,
I Live in Canada and had my Viatorres (3 of them ) for close to 4 yrs and never had any problems with warpage. I am sure alot of people are familiar with the extreme seasons we get here (right now it is -40 degrees celsius). Also, my Viatorres have been in the states, philippines and alot of parts in Canada. I can vouch that I never had problem with warpage with Viatorre cues. Jackson still emails me once in a while to check how my cues are holding.....definately a classy cuemaker. :D

Jackson said his com is done but the DSL connection is still down. Its better to give him a call, hes a very nice guy to talk to. Im sure his cues will play equally good or even better den USA made cues.

I went with Viattorre for the same reasons that you are considering them.
1. Great reputation from those who own Jack's cues. I ran a thread on this forum to find out the nitty gritty.
2. Jack and I went through about 20 emails worth of communicating about cue design and wood selection.
3. Price.

Reputation, Service, Value.

Dreco- I can get you a better price than $500 for a 1009 model! Email me and I'll send you some photos of what I have and how much each cost!
Thanks,
Zim

I would definitely go with a Viattorre. Bang for the buck! I have recently received a custom cue from a reputable cuemaker in the US and based on the quality of the craftsmanship and finish, Viattorre simply blew away my current cue. and to think that my Viattorre costs much less than my plain jane custom cue.
