OMG. Ted Lowe commentating of a Fred Davis match. Talk about memory lane. I don't actually have any recall of Fred ever winning a match - I'm sure he did - but this was in the day of limited professionals, and I think in those days former champions (Fred was a multiple world champ) qualified to play by right, like in golf, before ranking points and qualifiers became the sole criteria. It was in the days when we thought old blokes were the best snooker players, basically because all the snooker players were old blokes. How wrong we were.

Among Fred's claims to fame is being the only player ever to beat brother Joe fair and square in a bona-fide snooker match. Joe would never concede that his only other recorded defeat counted, when he was nobbled by having his cue stolen immediately before playing, only for it to turn up immediately afterwards.

Fred has the classic snooker stance that I was taught, leading more with the left than the current square-on style. And letting the white ball do all the work too, instead of forcing it through on practically every shot. Get on the natural angle line for the next shot and stay there was the dictum. How wrong we were.
