Hi everyone, i'm looking for some good ways to get into cue making/repairs. I have been a shooter for about 15 yrs and i now have the interest to get into doing minor maintenance and repairs and eventually building cues. I do have an understand some of the basics like replacing tips , shaft cleanings, and minor dent removal but have not been actually doing them. Any recommended books/vidoes or any insight to what is the best way of getting started would be much appreciated.
I started about a year ago, and have been down the "learning curve" road. Looking back, in my opnion, the best way to start is to buy Hightower's book on cue building and repair.
Cue Building Book
Most people would agree this is THE best money spent---just BUY IT !!
Most all your answers are in this book.
Now you need a lathe, and this is a matter of choice, and money on your part.
Hightower Lathes
or you can look at
Unique Products Lathes.
I started with a Unique Lathe and it is not super accurate, but I know of MANY people that do repairs, tips, wraps, ferrule work, etc on them, and they do a great job. Hightower's smaller lathe would be more accurate, but look at all the goodies involved in the different levels, and you find some trade offs.
NOW....you need the "goodies" to do the repairs...parts in other words.
Atlas Cue Supplies or
Prather Cue Parts.
You now have a good road map. All you need to do now is add MONEY !!!
As Mr Dennis Dieckman says in one of his videos...BE SURE AND TELL YOUR WIFE what your doing also
I am sure others have different opinions, but Hightower's book will explain just about everything you need to know so you can make some informed decisions.
Good Luck !!
