Was pool better 50 years ago?

I don't mean a better standard. I mean was it more exciting to be a top player, more enjoyable to watch, more interesting in general?

It all just seems a little bit less entertaining now.

Familiarity breeds contempt. No longer fanboy though still a fan. Takes a stiffer fix is all.

A top player could make a decent living {both Tourneys and gambling}

Likely (60%-80%) more fun to watch because the top players were not mechanical machines.
