Weird ruling

So during a tournament in Vegas this week there was what I perceive to e be a weird ruling/ reaction.
We are playing the team event and 3 times in a row on the black the opposition player gets up and walks away as our team member was shooting. I asked the ref if the other team does that whether it is a concession. The ref said no it is just poor sportsmanship and left it at that. Then when I was shooting the 8 the next time (not a gimme, but easy enough on a bar box), the opposition player does it again, I then stopped walked over and said "sorry mate, but can you please stay seated when I am shooting, especially on the black ball", he looks all pissed off and does not say anything. Their team is then pissy and rude the rest of the match, they did stay seated though, as a different ref came and watched.

Should the first ref handled it differently or am I just being precious?

P.S. we smoked them. :)

I would think the ref should have addressed it at your request. But depending on the organization hosting the tournament maybe that behavior isn't considered that bad. Simple good manners says your opponent should have been polite enough and respectful enough to allow you to shoot without going through the seven basic ballet positions right in your line of sight. In that situation I feel it would have been perfectly permissible for you to stand up walk away from the table and wait for everyone to get where they were going, then re-chalk and re-address the ball

The first ref would be hard pressed to give an official warning since he was not there to observe the infraction. I do feel that he should have addressed the situation though, taking you and your opponent aside and reviewing the sportsmanship involved.

i know people bash the apa (including myself from time to time even though i play on more than one team) but even in our local team tournamnets that would not be tolerated. only the player and score keeper may be in the playing area and the non shooting player is to be seated and quiet while his opponent is at the table. week to week play we have to hash it out our selves, but for for a division, qualifier, or city cup we have at least one national ref from our area that is on hand and he wouldn't let that one slide. first time it's a warning, then he watches. second time it's a foul, and i believe third time would be forfiet of game. a fourth i am not sure, but you'd be lookiing at losing that match and going on to next player.

I think the second ref did the right thing by watching the match and saying that if they did it again when she was watching, she would deal with it. The first ref seemed not to care.
They stopped after one extremely tough looking guy on our team told them it was not cool. :)

I don't always assume these things are moves, I just think that some people have poor etiquette and get caught up in the moment sometimes. It was just weird that two different players did it on their team.

Anyway, thank you. We won the match and ended up coming second in the tournament, losing twice to a truly excellent set of players.
