What are you doing for ventilation

I'm small time as compared to most but can make a big dusty or chemical mess quick that I'm not wanting to breathe anymore. A shop vac hose near the lathe basically does the job but is so noisy that I hate turning it on.

So I'm basically going to run 2" pipe with off shoot hoses or similar around the wall and out of my immediate area so just need some help on the collection and a quieter vaccum source

I used to have a swimming pool with an automatic cleaner.

The hose on the cleaner is made up of 20 pieces or so, each about 2 or 3 feet long. They pressure fit to connect together.

So, I have that hose behind my tools and benches and when I need to do work and connect to the vacuum (home central vac), I just separate a connection nearby in the hose and plug that into the power tool. When done, I simply put the hose back together awaiting another tool's use.

A cheap ez way for a part-timer like me to get er dun.

On my tapering machines I used to use a dust collector with the big air filter bags. They left a thin layer of fine dust all over the shop. So I removed the bag and replaced it with a hose that goes out the wall. I also built wood enclosurers with plexiglass doors around the tapering machines. If cutting a single ring of phenolic or phenolic ferrule or quick sanding or something I use a small vaccum cleaner and catch all the dust I can. That may not make the air safe, but it certainly helps. For the machine I core with and use the jewelers saw on to part off multiple rings, I have a a full face mask with face shield that feeds fresh air in from another room.

Any comments about using a Festool dust extractor?
While on the subject … how are the Jet extractors. What micron filter is the one to look for. I’m currently using a PSI collector with a 1 micron bag.

Dust collector OUTSIDE of the shop. + large squirrel fan venting to outside.

When I get a chance, I'll take some pics but....240 volt Delta Dust collector with a nanofilter from Wynn Enviromental that is piped around the shop with a Super Cyclone separator piped inline dumping the solid stuff into a trashcan and a hanging jet air cleaner that does down to .5 microns and changes the air about every 10 minutes on high speed, and a down draft table on the cleaning lathe. My Dad died of lung cancer and never smoked, but was a master craftsman of woodworking which he inhaled every day, no dust collection etc......My opinion, don't use a shop vac unless it has a HEPA filter....if it don't, then don't use it, get something better...if you smell it, it will kill you....plain and simple. Also NOT a fan of just piping it out the wall, unless you have no neighbors for 100's of yrds away............why poison them with your waste?

.5 micron dust is the very fine stuff that is the worst for your lungs. Fortunatey I am hundreds of yards from my neighbors. If I wasn't I would just put the unit with bags outside if I lived in a smaller lot neigborhood.

Spraybooth with explosion proof fan and dedicated outlet. Dust extractor with 1 micron filter for all woodworking machinery. Dust filtration unit in the ceiling.
For everything else I have a Festool vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter.
I try to do cleaning with regular intervals.
Blow off hard to reach places with compressed air and run the dust filtration on max for 4 hours.
I also have a heat pump/aircondition unit with filter that I clean about once a month.

Dust collector on all machines, mask for all operations, spray booth ventilation with outside air thru mask and protective clothing. Don’t want to be breathing thru a tube when I get old.

We are old, Jack.o_O

How ya doin'? Haven't seen you post in ages.
