What break is Cory Duell using?

After watching Corey beat Daulton at one pocket on an Accu-Stat tape, I thought he could beat some people that way (he runs out very well) but never run through a whole tournement of pros breaking that way.

Is he still using that crazy break? If he is, the old timers must be dazed (horrified?)to watch it.

I practice the game where you break and try and run all the balls in one hole and I have noticed that you do make a ball quite often when you break like Cory does. If you don't, though, you're screwed in 1-pkt and betting that your opponent can't win from a spread out table.

A couple of years ago, i was at the Derby, having a discussion with Corey and John Schmidt at the feature table about the feature table, and the differences we all noticed in how it played.

It was then, that Corey racked all the balls up, and said "Watch this"

He then broke the balls, in a way that most people would think he "missed" the break. Hitting the second ball missing the head ball, with standard one pocket break speed. He made the corner ball, and the balls that usually float in front of the opponent's pocket when you hit them bad....they were there, but the cue ball floated down behind them. He said that even if you didn't make the corner ball, that you had a pretty good safety out of it, and the corner ball would hang close to the pocket if you didn't make it.

So of course John and myself were amazed, so we all took turns racking the balls, and figuring out exactly where to hit them to produce the same results.
Which we each did.
And it only worked on the FEATURE table. Something about the conditions made it easier to pocket the ball. I tried in my next match on a table that was right next to the feature table, and had pretty good success with it, and i'm pretty sure that John had a match in the chapel where he said he had mixed results with it, when he came back and was talking to us later.

It would be interesting to see if Corey is using that break at all on his feature table matches, cause from what i remember, John had knocked him out of the tournament before we even got to talking about it.

I know that there is a guy in my home room who plays lots of one pocket, and he stinks. BIG TIME!
BUT...for years now, he has always hit the break in that manner (having figured it out on his own), and people think he's getting lucky. They are hoping for a shot cause they think he hit them bad, when that's what he is trying to do in the first place. He almost always gets the balls near his hole, and that cue ball floats down and plants itself behind all those balls that would normally be selling out.

Every time he breaks, people get all excited, and when he makes a ball or they are safe when he doesn't, they are shaking their heads in disgust.

AND...despite the fact that he stinks. I would say that he has the all time record for making a ball on the break in the room. It happens constantly. Not all the time, but if the session is long enough, you can be sure that it will happen a few times to say the least.

I guess i'll have to wait till the videos are released to see if Corey busts something like that out playing Efren. It wouldn't surprise me at all though.
