What is your TV game you want to see

What TV program do you want to watch?

What kind of games would you like to see on TV?
More men playing 9 ball or more women.
Would you like to see 8 ball. How about bringing back straight pool. Artistic world tournaments, not this TV horse game, but the real thing.
How about a ring game with the top players or the top gamblers.
:D

I think we all like to watch 9-ball. It is amazing to me that "trick shot magic" gets soooo much airtime. I can't even watch that. Who cares! Lets see more men's 9-ball. Oh, and one pocket would not be a good tv game. Lol.

I say get rid of the stupid made up trick shot thing! A tournament for trick shots.....lol! I like watching an Exibition, but that crap they got on espn is a waste of TV time. Trick shots have their place.....and it ain't a tournament.

As far as I am concerned there is only one trick shot man........MIKE MASSE!!!!!!! period point blank!

I say more ONE POCKET! Any One Pocket or Straight pool!

I would like to see One Pocket, but it is too slow of a game to make it on TV. I think Bank Pool would be a great game for TV. Banking balls to a novice (and pool veterans for that matter) is exciting. It's a different twist to the game than simply watching players pocket balls.

Hey Gremlin,

Keep in mind that we are all intitled to our own opinion. And thats all it is an "individual opinion". Yours as well. If you think of it from a growth of the game perspecitive, you would understand that you cannot get a mass of peoples interest in a game that they do not understand. Just because you like to play one pocket and 14.1 doen't mean that it would make a good tv program. However, i do agree that 8-ball may be a good choice. Most people know how to play 8-ball from some experience in their life. Even more so than 9-ball. As far as women vs. men. I love watching the women play. I think it is just that we see the men on tv so infrequently that when they are on, it seems special. Hey, I would watch Jeanette Lee and Jennifer Barretta play marbles for cryin out loud. (Notice: I am not responding to your 9-ball comment about it being brain dead). Thanks.

When I watched the second ring game on BCTV, I was enthralled with Parica's shooting! I think that a game like this that forces the players to make difficult shots is the key to success on TV. The current 9B game, Texas Express, is not exciting enough. To watch the top players run racks of 9B or play a safe or hook when they don't have a good shot is very boring. I love 1P but I don't think this game will attract much of an audience, especially those people that don't already understand the game. Straight pool might do it, but think about the player that's running 125 balls and wins the game and the other player never gets out of his seat - boring for people that don't already have an appreciation for the game.

I sure cant speak for anyone other than my self. As far as I am concerned 9-ball should fade away and pool should go the direction of skill rather than speed. 9-ball came along as a way to gain sponsors and generate money for the sport. A way to speed things up and add EXCITEMENT. Where are we NOW?? I want to see games that require THOUGHT PROCESS, not just "count to 9 and rack em' again". Dont get me wrong, there is and always will be a place for 9-ball, it just shouldnt be #1.

Hell, look at whats up now, 7 ball!!!!! Whats next, the US 5 ball championships??? All of this is done hoping to attract an audience of couch potatos with attention deficit disorder and a remote in their hand with a trigger-happy finger. What a shame!

8ball wouldn't work for TV. Why? Because casual viewer will probably not be familiar with international rules. Average viewer will not understand why a player might choose to play safe when there are other balls to shoot at, etc. 8ball games can often lead to many many safety shot exchanges...too slow.

14.1 wouldn't work. Only hardcore pool fans, more specifically 14.1 fans such as myself would watch it regularly. Also the TV wouldn't allow longer races.

One pocket for TV? I've never seen nor played that game, but just by reading the rules to me it seems very slow game with so many tactical possibilities. I wonder how many players outside US played it seriously?

15 ball rotation? This game would have even less viewers than 14.1.

9ball is the choice for TV nowdays. The game is fast paced, and there's a significant luck factor. Requires all pool skills to be played well. It's also very international...Asia, Europe, America...you name it, it's played everywhere...even in countries where American pool is not main billiard game. The only problem with it is that casual players who have only played "bar rules" 8ball will not be able to identify themselves with the game. I get questioned about the rules all the time...it's tiresome to explain it over and over again...

As for a dream TV game? Ching Shun Yang of Taiwan taking on Efren Reyes in 9ball race to 100.

I would love to see the 14.1 tourny that I played in ,Berlin Gernamy in 1972. they filmed it for stars@strips t.v. but I never got to see it.p.s. I won. STICK Larry will I see you feb 7 ? stick8@alltel.net

I'd like to see more men's 9ball. Or maybe some sort of gambling format. Additionally, I'd like to see One Pocket just because I have no exposure to it and I'd like to learn the game.

Hi CueHunter,

Please, speak for yourself on the 9-Ball subject! CueHunter, 9-Ball is brain dead and you won't admit it? I like 8-Ball, 14.1 and one pocket. 8-ball and 14.1 can be motified for the major networks. Bc TV is to specialized because of it's tiny following and is cash poor for the same reason. When the major networks see pool really has a following to sell products to beside cue sticks and chalk it will take off.

When pool becomes an Olympic Sport it will be on ESPN, NBC, CBS, ABC. Pay per view will only be used for special events.
Yes, I would like to see you and Mike Massey on TV in a real artistic pool tournament. The made for TV version can't compare to the real thing!

Now you know who I like to watch? LOL I am a ma ma's boy so I would watch the women's ring game first on ESPN 2 and watch the men's ring game next on ESPN or ABC. Photo of a lady who I want to watch in 8-Ball, 14.1 yes even 9-Ball. One of the former BCA 8-Ball Women's Division Champions Kimmy Shaw. (Selling Cell Phones At XMAS.)

Cheers,

Gremlin

FL REPLIES, You have put up a lot of photos, but this one is the best one yet. I am talking to people right now about getting me, Massey, Rossman and the entire IAPA on TV and having our world event seen world wide.

I totally agree with you, 9 ball does not draw flies, it's been over used and over seen. It's getting tired and worn out. Let's shake it up, put on and show some variety and see how that sells. What do we have to lose by doing that. :D

I was in Cornelia yesterday filming shorty on a 3 ball break for my DVD, I need to get into your place and film this 7 yr old kid I am being told about, call me and I'll be back up next week with my film crew. I am looking for very ususual people to break the rack, it's a concept I am teaching and I want a variety of room players to be seen making my point on film.
Yes our show and clinic is most definetly on for Feb 7th, I'll be in house the day before and the day after if any one wants to sign up for private, semi private or group video taped lessons. There will be a small fee for those, but anyone who gets in the general clinic, that's going to be free lessons, for 3 days in a row and that is something that should not be missed. You all get over to sticks and get in this thing, ya here. I am 51 minutes away from you, call me any time, I am on the way up.
I have a office and area HQ now in Mt Airy, so this part of the state is going to be seeing a lot of me in the future. :D

For TV, my vote would go to 8-ball. The reason is mostly marketing. In north America, way, way, way more people play 8-ball than anything else. Walk in almost any bar and check out what is being played. 8ball. Bars are where the "masses" play. The people that love pool, but maybe are a bit intimidated to go to an actual pool hall. Women , on average love the game as well. Its the crap that usually comes along with it they hate. Why would TV promote a game that only hard core pool players understand (9ball)? Makes no sense. People say 8ball is slower and not as exciting for TV. According to who? Statements like that are simply wrong. Go to the masses where everybody is familiar with 8ball and work from there. And GET WOMEN INVOLVED! All tournies should be mixed and women encouraged to attend. Sure Augusta can dis-allow female membership, thumb their noses at both the public and their sponsors and get away with it. IMO, they're the exception, not the rule in gaining a sport's acceptance. The pool industry needs to be in recruitment mode, big time if it ever wants to be seen as anything but a hustler's hobby. We should learn a bit of our marketing from the Brits. Their billiard stars are national heros. They're paid accordingly.
Trick shots, yeah I love 'em and think there's always going to be a place for exhibition shots. Just like golf, when there's a long drive contest on TV, I'm glued to it. Little in this world is better than seeing a ball get whacked 350+ yards. Gives me hope...as maybe Robin Williams would say.

FL REPLIES, YES, TRICK SHOT IS NEVER GOING TO BE THE MAIN EVENT, IT WILL GROW IN RESPECT WHEN EVERYONE REALIZES THE AMOUNT OF TALENT NEEDED TO DO THIS, that talent is far above 9 ball. Yes you are absolutely correct, right on the mark, the games most popular game, 8 ball a better and more fair game than 9 ball, the peoples game and you do not see it being played by pro's on TV, I think that is nuts. Let's see 8 ball being played by the best, the people who would want to watch that would be in the millions.

I have said over and over, Mike Massey is my close friend and he is the man and I am his greatest fan. With that out of the way, please, he is not the only star.

Tom Rossman, Charles Darling, Stefano Pelinga, Sebastian Giumelli can and have the ability to take him on any good day, there is a dozen more fast on the way up like Andy Segel. This is not a one man show, the IAPA has now over a dozen world class fantastic players from all over the world now on tour. You can see them in competition and me as well coming back from 4 yrs of retirement at the Hartford Open in Ct and the Masters event at the Allen Hopkiins event in Phil, Pa this late March.

FL REPLIES, I LOVE BANK POOL, seeing a player bank out and then win with a 4 railer, it can be electric, hugh mistake not putting it on and using a faster format, like 9 ball banks than the 15 ball type that can bog down into a safety contest and put every one to sleep. Still, the hugh mistake made is not taking games like banks or one pocket and edit out the slow stuff and put on the air the runs and the great part of the game and wins.
Espn does not do this because they are cheap stupid turkeys who could not film wonder dog taking a dump without screwing it up. :D

Didn't means no's disrespect there Larry!

I like watching the Trick Shot Exibitions, BUT..............

They have their place, and I don't think it is the format that ESPN has made up! It makes it look kinda foolish! It kinda cheapens it in my opinion!!

FAST WROTE - "the peoples game"

Thanks, well put. That's what I'll refer to 8ball now. Amazing how many will poo-poo the very game that first introduced them to billiards.
I have a pro friend that told me one of the reasons for 9ball is because a pro CAN play at a higher level than the average Joe that plays good 8ball. Maybe they're worried that if everyone played "the people's game" the talent gap would'nt be so big...?
