?What makes a good Tournament Director?

Recent post asking for 'qualified' Tournament Director.

Obviously knowing how to work the chart for Double and Single elimination. Including 'blinds' and player drawing for spots

Knowing the 'local' and national rules (i.e. BCA, Texas Expres)

Being able to interpret and explain those rules when applicable.

Figure out payouts (1st, 2nd and so on..) for 25% of the field, or the agreed upon percentage.

Knowing how to assign tables to keep the flow of the play going smoothly.

The list is short.. but there can be added qualifications.. what is yours?

Hi Tom, my first answer would be 'a reliable crystal ball'. LOL.
I agree with all your listed qualifications and would add: lots of patience.

tournament director

All those qualifications can be summed
up by saying:

Evelyn and Danny Dysert from Ponca City, Ok.

that run the Midwest 9 ball tour. Always a good smooth running tournament with them directing it.

I think "rack your own" allways makes a tournament better. This being the case whenever official or "neutral" or referee types are not available for matches.
It's allways better if the tournament director doesn't play in the tournament. Some are my friends and I don't mind at all that they play but the truth is it's a better tournament if they don't play.
The payouts should be determined before the winners are.

Most of male pros would tell you that being able to pay the winners is a good idea. The money should be put in an escrow account before the tournament starts.

what makes good tournament director

Look in the Dictionary under terrific tournament director and you'll find Scott Smith's picture.Scot is a gentleman, a fair practioner of the rules, kind and thoughtful and works to insure everyone is treated with respect and kindness , even when others don't reciprocate. Any tournament is richer with his presence, and he cares deeply about the players and fans in attendance. You'll always get my vote for best director Scott and Im honored to know you. Always the Duck(Senior Tour)

I couldn't agree with snapshot more. Midwest 9 Ball Tour is first rate! Evelyn and Danny are true professionals and they really seem to enjoy their work!

1) A person that is not a gambler.

2) Someone that doesn't play their own tournaments.

3) One that also shows no bias in rules or decisions of them.

4) Able to chew gum and walk at the same time.
