What's the cue to buy for $150
I received an email asking me:
Hi Larry,
I'm sure you probably get tired of this type question. I am getting back into pool after a 20 year layoff and am looking forward to playing again as I enter retirement. I want to get my feet under me before I really take the plunge into a really good cue. However, I don't want to play with a house cue while I'm re-learning either. What is a good cue to begin with in maybe the $150-$200 range? Is it true that most any of the known names in this price range will suffice? Thanks, and sorry for the lame question.

A few years ago I would not sell a Chinese cue, they were fire wood. Today, the quality has increased to the point where I am getting impressed. What is really scary is some of them have copied the playability of the more expensive cues. For $150, you can now buy a cue that plays almost as well as the $300 big name cues. You have a no name cue, but it's pretty and it plays so that's the trade off you make.
I sell both, plus custom cues. I would rather sell the big names because I make more money on them. The problem is most of the people I encounter don't have $350 to $600 to pop for a cue.
I tell them do not buy a cue under $100, most in that range is real junk.
I keep about $10,000 of cues in stock strictly in the $125 to $175 range. There are a zillion of these cues now on the market, so finding on in that price range is not a problem. What I offer is I know the ones that play like the big name cues and those are the ones I sell and I push.
Please no brag here, but I am a world champion Artistic champion and that does make me one hell of a testing machine. Any one wanting one of these cues just email me at fastlarry@bellsouth.net and I'll tell you the brand names, don't want to advertise that on the board.
If you don't buy from me, then ask around your pool hall and see what your buddies are using. If he made a good deal, is happy with the cue and it is in your price range, follow his lead. Do play with his cue first to be sure it works for you.
Yes, today you can buy a $125 cue from me, or from others like me and the cue will play and look great, that is the truth.
