Where is all the money?

We all agree American Pool needs sponors. My question is are these sponsors going to have to come from outside the industry? Retailers claim their rock bottom prices and low sponsorship return in the past don't leave them the profits to sponsor events to a great extent, maybe a players entry fee here and there. What about raising entry fees in major tournaments? May limit the field, cut out a lot of fillers like NASCAR has. Somebody somewhere is making good money in this business. Is it time for the custom cue makers to pony up some cash? I dunno. This is a dead horse sorry to beat it again. Something is definately wrong when someone as good as Karen Corr has made as much money at this point of the year as I have with a 12 dollar an hour job. And I'm for sure not one of the best in my field! I'm positive she puts in more than 40-50 hours a week.I watched curling on ESPN a couple of months ago Ford had a big logo on the ice for crying out loud! I know it's big with the Cannucks. It just seem to me we could do more with sponsorship. I don't want to knock the people who are out there trying their best to raise money it can't be easy. I'm just asking who is making the money and not putting some back into the sport we all love?

The APA is making buckets full of money. They support the WPBA, I suppose because the women are more visible and have a good image.

If the men could get a legitimate tour together the APA might throw a few bucks at them too.

Blud writes a column for their magazine. Maybe he has an opinion.

Behind every counter, in every Pool Hall, is a shelf full of chips, candy, pop & beer. Those guys are the silent collectors of cash. The Pool Hall is too. There should be a Pool Room Owners Association, with "NATIONAL rules of engagement", plus internet activity to advertise Pool Tournaments & merchandise. The manufacturers of Pool Gear ought to be supplying some money or products as a sponsor too. I have given away BreakRAKs as a prize for the winner. I hope to become a regular sponsor on tour, very soon.

Every one of the Big Pool Rooms should have INVITATIONAL MATCHES. They provide airfare, & lodging for both Players. The winner gets a $1000 or more. The patrons all cough up $25 or more to watch & chat with the Pro before the match, buy shirts & videos from the Pro, get Pro signatures, the concession sponsors kick into the pot & the Pool Room owner gets a shot in the arm of excitement. Everyone could line up & play with the Pro for $10 - $20 a match 8 Ball.

Lots of folks knock the APA, or BCA, and or whoever. I feel knocking is a big waist of effort when all these folks and many more add something to our sport.

About the APA, making buckets full of money, can't answer that one, besides, we live in a free country, make what you can when you can.
If they were doing something wrong, they would go under.

I don't know if Rene'e, and or her bosses, [Larry Hubard Terry Bell] would branch out with the men. They got burnt out with the men a few years ago. There wheels not broke, so why change it.
It would be nice if they were to pitch in as you say.

They do run a good company. About 225,000 players. yes, they make money, and there earn every penny of it. Good for them.

I will promiss to visit with her, in a few weeks in vegas about sponsering the men. We shall see.....

Blud,

I hope you did not misunderstand my statement. I'm glad they are making money. They have a product which 225,000 people obviously enjoy so they deserve every penny.

I know there are a hell of a lot of people who are now serious pool players because they initially started with the APA, me included (Notice I said "serious", not necessarily "good" :D )

Unfortunately, without serious TV exposure, sponsoring the men may not be a good use of their advertising budget.

Thanks Blud.

I think an outfit like the ACA should put together a big tournament. Dan Janes and a few others have backed or at least been the main sponsor of tours and tournaments. There's alot of big bucks in that group & they might want to hang up the phone with Lucky from Japan long enough to pass the hat for a prize fund. I saw today where AmberBock is sponsoring a mens tournament in NYC with ESPN coverage. Great, we have an obligation to let Michelobe and ESPN know we watched and enjoyed the event. I think our goal should be to blow Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest coverage out of the water! Lofty I know but I beleive in us!

Hey wally, not taken wrong.

There is one main problem with pool in the US today.

IMAGE...
That says it all.
Afew years ago, I was at an event with a high-end wanna-be sponser. BIG MONEY. In came a pro-player, cussin, wanting to fight, and then more spectators came in raisin cane. Note, this is not all the pro-players fault. Not many were dressed properly, and this had a huge effect on IMAGE....

The sponser came to me with his wife and said in no uncertain terms, no way will my company sponser such going ons.

I stepped back and made my apoligies and he and his lobvely wife left. We still talk, but he's not interested in sponsering a fly, around pool. I, can't blame him one bit.

I have been out here for years as most of you folks know. I have had hundredrs of interviews with TV, anchors. I beg them, all of them, to speak nicely about our pro-event, and that things have changed over the years.

Ok, they say, then you watch the evening news, and the first rattle out of the box,

HOLD ON TO YOUR WALLET, THE POOL HUSTLERS ARE IN TOWN. DON'T GO TO THE LOCAL POOL-ROOMS OR BARS, SUBJECT TO MANY FIGHTS AND GAMBLING.

Of course, he fails to mention the foot-ball pot he's running, and holding all the cash, or that he has a drink or two now and then, he make a not so true statement, that most guys like him makes,

I worked my way through college playing pool. ALL BS.....

He couldn't make two balls in a row, if his go-nads were in a vice..

All BS, but we catch the brunt of it all.

So guys, it's our "IMAGE", that needs to be changed.

The Women are making great strides from there side of the isle, we need to have a true MEN'S PRO-TOUR, and work it real good, with solid corpate leadership. Then they will come, we hope....

Just treat folks like you want to be treated, and things will come about.

Dawg, sent you a PM, check it out.

BYW, Lucky's not spending a lot as in the past.

It would help if the the male pros would act better and put themselves together as a dependable, sellable package. Antics like Earl's walking away from a taped ESPN match doesn't help.
