Where to play in Boston?

I read some of the older threads, but it seemed like some of the more popular places closed down (Boston Billiards, Renaissance, etc.).

So far, all I know of is Flattop Johnny's, but I was wondering where you guys who live in Boston play regularly? I'm not really looking for action, just decent tables and reasonable rates.

Appreciate any recommendations, thanks!

I can't think of anything in Boston...but just a little north you have World Class Billiards in Peabody, MA. A mix of GC's, Diamonds and 3C tables with some decent players hanging around. Can't be more than a 20-30 minute ride from downtown barring traffic.

If your locked into Boston check out some of the local Elks/Moose/Fraternal lodges and see if they have any decent equipment. If they do you might be able to join at a decent price.

I think MA had more pool rooms shut down in last 10 years than any other state, just from mid-state to Boston I can think of at least 5.

In Boston the only place left I'm pretty sure is Jillians but no clue how their tables play. Ayer has The Billiards Cafe, nice tables and ball sets, lots of people there most of the time due to leagues. Clinton has BreakAway Billiards, usually no real players there but the tables are nice, crappy balls though. The Jillians in Worcester actually just re-did their tables at the behest of a few of the players, they play very fast but are now way way better than they used to be.

appreciate the info guys, might have to check out jillians since all the other places might be too far unfortunately :/

i was doing some reading and found out about Columbia Billiard Co, located in dorchester. anyone ever play there?

SnookersRI

If you don't mind a 50 min drive down south of Boston I would highly recommend Snookers Bar in Providence,Ri they have 15 GC tables, great food and great crowd. They also have in house 9 ball tourney every Wednesday starts around 6:30, Table time during weekdays $5/hr or $10 whole day till 6pm.

Hope this helps.

Nothing really in Boston other than Jillians. You can also go straight up 93 North 40 minutes to Salem NH and hit Grand China Billiards. Not a high level players room but a bunch of C- level players that will just play.....instead of gambling. It is in a Chinese restaurant so you can have dinner and drinks and there is a shopping mall right across the street in case you need to bring the old lady. Clean friendly and good atmosphere and equipment.

Billiard's Cafe

It's a great place with nice people, low-crowded, most of them over 45 but very friendly and quiet. Old style bar with a lot of beer and beverages, bands for weekend and more. 9 footers, simonis 860, nice house sticks (2pieces) 7-10$ per h. If you're lucky you can get huge self-made hot-dogs only for 3$. It's a league bar so you might have the chance to meet a few good players and me:))))
I play there 'cause I didn't find anything like this in my area (Waltham). BTW, anyone from around?

PS: They have a snooker table very rare in our area.

Enjoy.

world class

Columbia billiards in Dorchester is in a really rough section of town with little parking, really old and very run down. World class billiards on the other hand is only 15 mins outside Boston, a straight shot right up Route 1 north. 3 heated 3c tables, 3 GC and 12 diamond tables. Some really good players, Mike Dechaine comes in and a lot of other strong players.

I would also recommend World Class. West of the city in Waltham there is Waverly Oaks/Corner pocket, a nice room full of Gold Crowns, but it is a bit of a travel. In Cambridge near MIT there is Flat Top Johnny's.

you made my day man!!!! Thanks a lot for this! I've traveled 1 1/2 month 38 miles to Ayer to play a league and Corner pocket is just 2 miles away from me. i can't even belive this. You save my time, my money my car. I have cold beer for you anytime you want in Corner pocket. Just give me a sign if you are in the area and we'll meet for a nice pool/beer conference:D...Thanks again.

Chris

PS: I knew about CP but I've read a stupid review it says that they only have two rusty tables and no pre-made schedule....lol. I was there and it's a paradise for what I need (training). Thanks

DOES ANY OF YOU KNOW WHAT LEAGUE ACTIVATES IN CORNER POCKET? I've asked the guy from pool hall but he says he doesn't know for sure. Thanks/

outside of boston

i've been to columbia billiards - they're parking is behind the building.
if you are looking for an OLD school pool hall, you've found the place. literally, if you took a picture of it from 1960 and compared it to what it looks like now, probably looks the same. it just smells and feels of the type of place out of a movie.

westgate in brockton is the place i usually go to. $10 for a table from 10am - 6pm. that's $10 for 8 hours. amazing. they have a bunch of (20?) GCs and some decent players.

stix and stones (i think that's the name) in abington (next to brockton) opened up recently. nice gc's, but no ball return (10 tables?). similar prices to westgate

corner pocket is a decent place. plenty of parking, decent food, but tables are extremely variable in quality.

jillians is ok. $$, red cloth and parking is painful. i usually only go there if i need to test out a cue or if i'm meeting someone there.

hope this helps, but honestly westgate is an overlooked place.

I can't believe

that cities as big as Boston don't have plenty of places to play. Wichita is just knocking on half a million people metropolis wise and has:

Southrock Billiards
Rumors Billiards
Shooters Billiards
SidePockets Billiards
Stix Billiards (my personal home room)
Club Billiards
Champs
Rackem up
Seneca Street Bar and Grille
Cy's

and a few others. But Wichita always has been a AAA city for Pool ever since I came here in 1973.

so I called up westgate a few days ago and asked about the $10 deal, but they said they aren't running any specials? just wondering if maybe it's for regulars only?
