Why change the game ?

Why does the pockets have to be smaller , the balls spotted anywhere but the spot , the cloth faster or slower, rules changed to make it harder for any one ? Does any one think that maybe tougher tables is driving away the very people you want playing ? Good players are going to beat weaker players no matter where you play . Two fouls with no jump cues was a lot better 9 ball game and certainly more enjoyable to play....

I think when the slow-down on TV coverage started in the early 90s, they had to come up with a way to make the game "faster" because there was less airtime overall. Also there was some "need" to make it more exciting and fast. So came the so-called "Texas Express" ball-in-hand-anywhere on a scratch rule. I remember taking a year off competing, then came back to a local tournament with this rule. If ball-on-headstring on a scratch makes the game longer, the qualifying matches can be made to shorter "races." Maybe it's great for TV, but I wonder if that trickling down to the local tournaments possibly hurt the game more than help it?
