Why My Break?

why me, why?
hows come every time i break, no matter where i leave the cue ball, i just seem to never, ever have a shot? or a decent spread?

i dont know how many times i left the cue ball right in the middle of the table yesterday, and simply never had a shot. the '1' would end up on the short rail for no shot. or the '1' goes in and the '2' is on the opposite short rail. or i end up completely snookered. so many times balls would roll right into the path of the '1' or '2' or '3' and i never have a shot. and then on the rare occasion i have a ball down and do have a shot on the '1' the '2' ball is stuck behind another ball with basically no chance to get to it.

do you guys think its possible i need to call in a priest and have an exorcism performed? or sprinkle some of that holy water? or keep a bible near the table?

i am just sick and tired of this.
it just goes on and on.
i bet out of every 50 breaks i have maybe 2 decent chances to run out.

Practice, concentrate, practice, concentrate, practice, concentrate, practice some more, and don't give up when you don't see immediate results...................practice......................................................

Do a search on this forum for Black Jack David Sapolis and read his article on negativity. Or buy a lot of cheese. ;)

Hit 'em harder :D

Take a look at your fundamentals, make sure you get a good full contact on the head ball, even if you have to sacrifice a bit of speed for that accuracy.

Perhaps you could try changing the position you break from too.

And if all that doesn't work, snooker (as we call it here) with your next shot. You might not be able to run out, but you can still stop the other guy getting out, and maybe get a chance to next time.

And buy a Sledgehammer............

Sounds to me like you need to do a couple of non-break-related things, such as practicing playing safe and practicing tough shots. Ask yourself this next time you're left "without a shot" after a break: "Would Efren be able to get out from here?"

If your answer is consistently "No" -- that is, if you're consistently THAT snookered after the break, start making bets that you will break and hand the table over afterwards. Give the guy 5 to 1 that he can't run out after your break. You'll be rich.

Otherwise, stop hoping for an easy out and learn to duck, learn to make that 4 rail shot, learn to push out well enough to tempt your opponent into giving you a better chance.

Or switch games. Nine ball is for great shotmakers with balls and luck on their side. Start playing something that has more of a chance for a shot and less emphasis on the break-and-run.

Or hit them softer.

Or maybe that's why there's a 'push out' shot in 9-ball...heh
