Why Not More Open-Style Events?

With so much attention turned to the GREAT Derby City...I just wonder why there aren't more such "pay to play" open-style events, like the Windy City...U.S Open etc.

I assume they are profitable for the promotors without TV money. Is that true?

If so, why aren't there AT LEAST 12 per year?

Why wouldn't all the current promoters band together and create a League or and least a Tour (like the PGA) and have a LARGE open event once a month capped off by Superbowl style Annual Championship where the 12 event winners would square off the play for the National Championship.

Of course, if an event like the DCC is a "loss leader" for Diamond and they do it for marketing purposes only, then that answers my question...but I assume they make money on the event.

Any ideas?

Time and money are the two chief concerns. someone who wants to participate in one of these events, who is not pro, and has a real job. saving the cash and getting the time off to go to two events per year is manageable. if you had one per month in varied locations folks would save their money and only attend the event near them. which would bring down the number of players per event..... although you may get a few locals who might not travel to attend a large event, but would play in it if its in their back yard.. but IMO overall you would make more money with few large events than many small events..much less overhead.
