The tournament got kicked off today. Danny and Evelyn
Dysart are the TD's. 124 players. Handicapped 9 ball.

Tony Fargo is here. He won last year and took 2nd 2 years ago.
James Walden is here. He won it 2 years ago, and took 3rd, I believe last year.

Some out-of-towner players that are pretty good like
L.V. Abernathy.

Other notables in the tournament are mostly local, like Steve Rector (he played in Memphis), Tony Klima, Mark Rogers, Marshall Rooney, and yours truly.

James only went for 7.5$ in calcutta, but Tony went for 13$$.

All tables at Shooters being used for tournament play, so I noticed
Tony and James left, probably to go a mile north to Rumors Billiards
for some action. Will report more tomorrow.

If I win 2 more matches, I will end against Walden most likely.

Scott, Wish I could have made that one. Other irons in the fire right now. Good luck in the tourney and hell, kick JW's ass... Seabuiscut (my travelling partner, Darryl) got him in April, I know you can!

BTW, sorry I didn't answer your PM about the tournament, but wasn't sure if I could make it or not when I got the PM, so was going to answer later and just forgot. Hazard of aging, I guess! :)

Keep us informed...

Thanks,
Bob

1st night hassles ...

Big tournaments can surely draw some hassles along with
them. I played my first match in the back room at Shooters
(3 tables in the back room), and people were packed into
the other 3 round tables by the table. 5 or 6 young guys
were sitting there talking loudly at times, and after we
were approaching halfway, it was hard to put up with.
They were told to keep it down, which fell on deaf ears.
I started slow and my opponent was out ahead 4-2, with
him going to 7. I made a tough 3 ball, and my shape on
the 4 was a tough think cut down just off the long rail.
I missed the shot, and my opponent got out. The next
game, they were talking loudly, and my opponent missed
a shot he normally would have made.
I could take it no longer and told them to shut up or find
somewhere else to sit, that we were trying to play a match.
They seemed taken back by my comments, but they were
a lot quieter after that. I was down 5-3, and trying to keep
my opponent from getting on the hill. I ended winning the
last 5 games for the win, although my opponent and I were
both still annoyed at their lack of manners during a tournament
match.

Later on, I was watching a few good match-ups in the back room,
and 2 local guys were playing on 1 of the tables. Both are usually
nice guys, but 1 was doing shots and chasing with beer. He picked
up his opponents cigarette and smoked it, which didn't go over big.
But when he started to grab quarters from the other guys stack
on the table, all hell broke loose. It started as just a quarrel, but
escalated to a loud in your face arguement. One of Shooter's
people tried to settle it, then went and got Evelyn, the TD, and
she came back. I was right behind their player's table, but I left,
with them claiming to whip each other's butt shouting, and Evelyn
was trying to get them to calm down. You could still hear them
up front at the bar. I find out how that turned out today.

Getting 124 players into a 10 bar table Pool room is bad enough,
but when you add spectators and railbirds it can get pretty hectic
sometimes.

So Scott, How did everything turn out? Who won? How did you do?

Thanks for the updates!
