Will the hit change all that much?

I ordered a new cue and am now wondering if I should have requested a Ivory Joint? The cue has been ordered with a 3/8 flat face phelonic joint. I thought about Ivory, but the cost (@$75 more) had me go with the phelonic joint.

My questions have to do with several things...first off is there a noticable difference in the hit? How likely is it that the Ivory joint will develop a fracture?

I didn't want to post this in the "Ask the Cuemakers" section since I am really looking for opinions from players and there experiences with ivory...

only 75 bucks for an ivory joint, thats a great price. rick howard gets 200. ive had some dealings with ivory, and with the joint done properly you shojld have no problems............however you need to take care of it. dont ding it up or subject it to radical temp changes. ive had ivory ferrules on my szamboti for over 10 years with no problems. and ive got a cue thats over 25 yrs old thst has an ivory butt plate. no problems.

played with a scruggs with an ivory joint and it played great. seamed more lively than phenolic or stainless

I would surmise that the ivory would certainly add value to you cue- as you said, you'd have paid more for it though...

I'm sure you made a fine choice for a cue- regardless of the joint type. Might as well get used to it- its a done deal!

$100 poorer

Well I had him change the joint...I figured that it will not only play better, but add to the value - converting a hoppe. Won't reveal the cuemaker yet...but very excited. Hopefully have the cue in two weeks. hope I made the right decision.

Good move. I will only play with flat faced ivory these days. Hope you like your new cue.

Hell, I'm paying $75 a piece for the ivory ferrules on the new cue I'm getting. An ivory joint would've cost another $250!

The cue maker cut me a break since I was getting other work done as well and replacing the joint anyway..... The price normally charged was higher than I paid. I initially wrote $75 but that was a mistake...the cost was $100 + what I was originally paying for the phelonic joint ...not sure why I was thinking $75 more ...

I have never hit with an Ivory joint, but look forward to it. Two weeks...

i can see why people get upset about the over charging for ivory parts. from what i remember a ferrule is less than 15 bucks a piece to make a joint is 35-59 and a butt cap is less than 75,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,cue makers just see dollar signs when you say ,,,,,i want ivory

It takes a little more than buying the Ivory. What a sweet hit and feel. Well worth it my friend,

The ivory which a cuemaker has now, has been stockpiled for quite a long time and wasn't due to the killing of an elephant last week. Besides, ivory has many more applications in other areas of life than pool cue usage. The amount for pool cues is miniscule comparatively speaking. Elephants do die on their own from old age, disease, and other means...not from shootings due to pool cue building. And if you want to stop ivory poachers and wealthy hunters that go to Africa just for the joy of the hunt, you need to move there and become the new sheriff in town. It's like all of the meat in every grocery store throughout the country, as long as it's there...I'm going to keep eating it everyday.
