Will wood get softer in humid conditions ?

I think this may be elementary, but I'm not sure about this. The other day was very humid and I was playing and after the session I unscrewed my cue and accidentaly hit the shaft with the joint pin of the butt and I was really surprised about the depth of the holes it made to the shaft ! The pin really didn't hit the shaft so hard, but the holes were very deep on my quality Scruggs shaft. My question is, did it really matter that the particular day was very humid, would I have had similar dents on my shaft on a very dry day ?

It left 2 deep holes and 1 extra deep hole on the shaft and so far I've gotten the 2 easiers holes to disappear without sanding and some of the 1 extra deep hole remains. I've taken painstakingly long hours watching television and expanding the wood in the dent area with water. It works, but takes a loooong time with deep dents. Sigh. But, anything for the precioussssss... my precioussss... :p

Simple answer is YES many woods will get softer with humidity.

Thanks. That's exactly what I thought. To me it seems maple is one of those woods...
