Wolfgang Spindle on Taig Mill

I bought one of the Wolfgang Engineering spindles for my CNC Taig mill. The mount that comes with the spindle is designed to to used "in place" of the stock Taig spindle. I wanted to use the Wolfgang spindle for my inlay work, but didn't want to have to swap spindles back and forth when I needed to use the stock spindle (with ER 16 collet set) for other tasks that require larger tooling. I made a simple mount using 1/8" angle iron and attached it to the stock motor mounting block. I can now just load tooling in whichever spindle I want to use and I'm "good to go"

A little early, but so far so good.

Bill,
How do you like the wolfgang spindle for doing your inlay work?

Hi Mike,

I just got it mounted and I haven't done too much with it yet. I have done some tests cutting pockets with the Wolfgang and the stock Taig spindle for comparison. The Wolfgang's higher speed (20,000 RPM) does allow for higher feed rates and the finish seems a little better than the stock Taig spindle (10,000 RPM). Some people have changed to a larger pulley to increase the speed to 30-40K. I may look into that, but it looks like it will work fine for me as is. I've only used a .035" cutter at this point, but Tony Zinzola stated in one thread that he regularly used .0156" cutters with the Wolfgang spindle.

If you do a forum seach on Wolfgang, you will see that a number of people have used this spindle will good results. Many move up to the NSK and ,if you've got an extra 3-5K laying around, that's the way to go. However, for the money, you can't beat the Wolfgang spindle.
