Wood Cues: Tradition or Tradeoff

Railbirds are a common phrase in billiards.

Billiard cues were mostly made from wood which are a natural habitat of billiards.

Is any familiar with the early history of billiard manufacturing and how the production of lumber decimated the bird population in early America.

The carbon fiber is making waves, however purchasing a wood based cue is about supporting the industry. The first cue should always been a wood cue.

What is the carbon industry anyway? When I buy wood I understand where it grows. Where does carbon grow?

A resin that is heated and treated to fibers. It’s basically a resin. Used in car racing is very common and bicycle racing. Lightweight and strong.
With pool it is molded into a shaft. This is just a quick example since there are many techniques such as Folding or rolling.

It’s normally hollow like a pipe.

For example I can swap the hood of my car and out a carbon fiber one to reduce weight. Manufacturers will make a mold of the hood. Usually by laying down the fiber over the actual hood to form it’s shape. I’m familiar with it in the auto industry.

These shafts are not the fibers used in racing.

Well you can’t be a pool player or cue collector if you’re an environmentalist. The exotic woods and materials have long been destroying the ecosystem. Anything produced in masses that involves wood. Some even frown upon the exotic wood trade.

I heard ebony may head that route where it may also be banned.

So I’m guilty too as I’m contemplating an ebony into ebony cue. LOL

Heck I use to play with tuxedo style cues for those that know what I’m talking about.

Banned material, most animals are domesticated.

Most trees are preserved in seed banks.

What are you people talking about?

You think in the third world someone is reading a sign that says don't do that.

Americans say weird things sometimes. Who would ever stop you with banned pool equipment?

Show me the research that exotic wood chopping is having negative effects on the ecosystem.

I am a regular in fighting local policy near the United Nations plaza.

They are trying to ban feeding birds in New York State. Its a nice thought but its New York State.

I wont let migrating birds that have migrated for civilizations go hungry because some policy maker thinks wildlife is dangerous. Birds are predators to insects and mosquitos, they are more effective than chemical spraying and cheaper to maintain.

Exotic woods from special trees have properties that are worth studying for adaptation in unusual climates.

Look at the illogical reasons, where is the environmental and wildlife justice?

It obviously requires energy to produce carbon fiber anything - energy comes from using some sort of fuel.
So cutting a tree to make a cue or creating fuel for manufacturing a cue both utilize natural resources to make a product.
Sorry everyone but you can’t make anything with just air!
