Thanks for posting this. In scheduling my Tivo pool recordings I went right passed it thinking it was last years WSP that they were showing over and over again.
I noticed it is on 10/27/05 12:00 noon Eastern Standard time for 6 hours straight on ESPN2 for anyone that missed it like me.

I watched most of that (part of it when I should have been sleeping, 5 AM comes early). It was reasonable done despite Mitch & Jim's inane commentary.
I wanted to ask New Yorkers a question though. Is that Slate Billiards place as bad as it appeared in it's commercials? Black cloth, gag me with a flavor straw!!!!

No. That Slate place is worse than it appears. They have a lot of nice tables but its more of a trendy lounge than a pool hall. The lighting is terrible. Table time is about $15/hr per person. Probably more on a friday or saturday night. Beers are about $6 or $7 but everyone there drinks martinees.

I also saw they ripped off the league commercial as their own.

I took a nap setting my alarm to wake up at 8:00pm. (I finally crawled out of bed at 8:30. I guess I was too groggy to post that it was on until three hours later.) Saw Marcus make a four-ball combo to win one game against Mika. Jeremy Jones and Corey Deuel's match played after that, followed by Corey and Mika, then the final match between Corey and Marcus, when I finally remembered to post that it was on.

At one point, Mitch said "He's not doing anything I'm saying!" or something to that affect. I can't remember what match it was because I tune his ramblings out. Another gem: Corey was on the hill making a 2-9 combo to advance; of course Mitch said, "he'll be playing safe for sure."

It was actually Jim Wych that said that, because he had been drawing up all these "should be" routes and position patters on the telestrator for half an hour, and Mika (or was it Marcus) would completely choose totally different routes. It made Jim look like a moron to the average schmoe, but to his credit his drawn routes seemed more natural.

To Mitch's credit, that 2-9 combination was HARD! The nine was about a foot and a half away from the pocket, the two was another foot and a half away from the nine, the cueball was another 2 feet away from the two, and there was a lot of angle between the cueball, two, and nine. When Corey stroked it in, you should have seen Mika's face, because he didn't even think Corey would even go for that. It was an excellent, but very ballsy shot, considering it was hill-hill and also that he finessed the combination in. If he missed the shot, Mika would definitely have won the match.

Slate billiards is the old LEGENDARY CHELSEA BILLIARDS.

Every world calss player and unkown road player had played there at one time or another.

It was not uncommon to walk in there at anytime and see a grand or more stuffed inot the lights.

Ginky, rob Saez, Tony Robles etc, all cut their teeth there (Although Robles's father also owned a pool room).

About 7 years ago slate bought out chelsea, redesigned the place and KICKED out all the pool players in favor of the up-scale $10 per drink late night crowd.

It was a bitter pill for me, and some other people and players to go back and patronize that place. This was Slate's first attempt (holding the tournament) to to return to the mainstream pool world since the change. I guess the night life there is drying up.

Well like I said, when Mitch is commentating, I try to tune it all out!

He was so confident in the shot he just hit it pocket speed. Nothing extra in case he missed!

did anyone else notice jim wych's comments about corey? he said that mika and corey "won't be going to the movies any time soon" aren't they friends? they are in multiple videos together on that world pool site, and wych also said that corey's not very good with the "rake" doesn't corey seek out games where he has to shoot every shot with the crutch?

Yes, Mika & Corey are friends outside of the pool room. If I'm not mistaken, WorldPool.com has a few videos of them.... Want to know how well Corey plays with a "rake"? LOL, head over to McCready's board & ask him. I heard a story just a couple of weeks ago about this.... LOLOLOLOL, pretty funny. if Keith doesn't tell ya, I'll give ya what little I know. ;)

the thing about them not bein friends didn't bother me as much as the other comment, he could of just been saying that to build hype, but i had read jam's posts about corey playing against keith shooting every shot with the crutch, and i've heard other stories, commentators don't have the easiest job, as a professional though he should have his facts straight

LOL, I didn't know JAM had posted that story... I missed it. I heard one of the players telling the story at the open... LOL, it was pretty comical. Making rivalries whether contrived or not, might not be a bad idea.... give the viewing audience more of an incentive to pick one & root for them to win. ;)

Yeah, I personally though they both talked about Corey as if he wasn't worthy of being there. I think he is one of the best around.

Just enter Billiards as a Season Pass with 'First Showing Only'. Then you get all the new tournaments and none of the repeats. I didn't know it was on till I got home and had four hours of Billiards to watch. Amazing how that four ball combo lined up for Chamat at hill-hill.

I watched the Corey/Jones, Corey/Immonen, and the Corey/Chamat matches. If Allison was playing there, she would have beaten every one of them except maybe Chamat. I couldn't believe how poorly they all played except for Chamat. Corey would make some great shots and then miss some real easy shots. You just don't see Allison Fisher shooting that poorly except for the time she had neck spasms.

It's easy to say how people SHOULD play on TV, but unless you have actually done it I would be careful to cast stones. Look at how much TV time Allison has had compared to any of the men you just mentioned.

In my opinion she is way more comfortable in front of the camera than any other male, except for Archer, he plays great all the time. If you put any top male pro in front of the camera as much as Allison or Karen has they would play close to the top of their game, just like the females do.

Were you at the finals of the BCA in Vegas this yr? It was a brutally ugly match from the parts that I saw... both she & KC were missing shots that they shouldn't...good thing it's taped & edited as opposed to a live telecast. Even pro's are going to have off days. I can't run 3 balls but once in awhile I pull something out of a place where the sun doesn't shine... every game & every day is different...even the pro's can't play perfect all the time.

I totally agree. Doesn't the WPBA have a contract with ESPN that gives every WPBA event coverage on ESPN for the semi's & the finals? I could've sworn I saw that somewhere not too long ago. As best as I can figure, the guys get 3 shots at it... BCA, World Summit, & the Bicycle club...am I wrong, are there more or am I wrong on the locations? The men rarely get a tourney with ESPN exposure..... the women probably are & should be, much more comfortable on the ESPN table.

That's the problem with combos in 9 Ball; If you give them a bit of extra speed to ensure you don't leave the 9 hanging if you miss, then the extra speed MAKES you miss unless it is a real easy combo or you are a really good shooter. The combo of Corey's was not easy, and he hit it at the speed he did to have a chance to make it in. Presumably he was thinking he'd rather increase his odds of making it than try to play it 2 ways, as he knew if he missed he'd sell out the rack (and the match and the tournament!) even if he didn't leave the 9 hanging.
