The 19th Midwest Open Classic is over. The field was smaller than expected {40 players}but was very talented. Hosted by Breakers Billiards which is ran By AZ's Tammy jones and her husband Troy, Mac Ashby ran another great tournament. Matches were scheduled and ran on time all weekend. The total prize money was $6500. Breakers guaranteed $2000 added and the talent showed up.
Some players of note: Jesse Bowman, Tony Layne, Brian Groce{5 time winner of this tournament}, Denver Barger, Josh Johnson, Rick Pena, Shannon Murphy, Jason Miller, Joe Brown, Jeff Beckley, Dan Walton.
5 players sold for over $200 in the calcutta and only 2 of those 5 cashed. Jesse Bowman finished in 4th place and Jason Miller in 7-8th.
The toughest draw of the tournament has to go to 17 year old Kevin Hall from Michigan. He beat Rob Ganote the first round then was sent to the one loss side by Derby City Bank Champ Jason Miller. On the one loss side he beat, Bill Hawkins, Jeff Beckley, Nesli Ohare, Shannon Murphy {recent Viking Tour winner} Jason Miller, Dan Walton, and Jesse Bowman. He was left in 3rd place by Tammy Jones who played some great pool all weekend. Non-pro women get a 2 game spot in the race to 9 loser break format. However, Tammy DID NOT GET THE 2 GAMES.
Tammy beat, Butch Johnson, Jim Knifely, Casey Ward, Dan Walton, and lost the Hot Seat to Joe Brown 9-8 who played very steady 9 ball til the end. Tammy then beat Kevin Hall to go back after Joe Brown and lost the final match 9-4.
Joe Brown played steady controlled 9-ball all the way til the end. The guy never showed emotion no matter what was happening during the match. I have known Joe for a long time thru pool, but had never really sat and talked with him. He is another great ambassador for pool. A great player, with a lot of knowledge of both the physical and mental aspects of the game, and a great attitude as a person. Congrats to him on his Win.
A couple of side notes. The final 4 on the winners side was Mike Minor and Joe Brown who both sold for $80. Dan Walton who sold for $70 and Tammy Jones who sold for $30.
I managed to lose my first match to Tony Layne and then beat Josh Johnson, Denver Barger, Casey Ward, and a couple other players before running into Jesse Bowman on Sunday. He beat me 9-6 for 7-8 finish.
1st Joe Brown $2400
2nd Tammy Jones $1425
3rd Kevin Hall
4th Jesse Bowman
5-6th Mike Minor- Dan Walton
7-8th Sam Kirby- Jason Miller
Congratulations to all the players and a special thanks to Breakers for another great tournament. Watch for the next one!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sam

This tourney is in Muncie, Indiana. Originally started in Ft. Wayne, Indiana at Billy's USA bar and Grill. Tourney director Mac Ashby moved it to Muncie after Billy's closed up. Don't miss the next one, it will be bigger and better. Sam

What a great payout for only 40 players! Tammie's finish only cements my previous post stating that she really will be one to watch on the upcoming IPT. Looks like she is getting plenty of big table practice in, and she is already a top notch 8 ball player.

Thanks for the report Sam. Big congrats to Tammy! Not just an 8 ball champion I see. I always said you were the best player in that family. :D (sorry Troy, this ain't banks)

Troy can play a little, we used to run together. But if you look at the wall by the big tables, most of the stuff is hers. Valley, BCA, and various other titles. She knows how to handle the table and if you let her play, you may not like it. Great shooting, and great safety play too.
Oh yea, there was a little action going on the big table when I left too. Partners 9-ball, 7 ahead for around 500 jellybeans. Jesse and Josh Johnson playing Jason Miller and Shannon Murphy. Don't know how it came out. Sam

Thanks Sam and everyone! I was glad to just be playing. Got lucky a couple of times and caught a minor gear. Was pleased to finish that well since I haven't been playing any tournaments lately. Couldn't have done it without the practice Sam! Thanks!

Sam and I have been practicing in the mornings a couple of times and hopefully will continue for a while. Banks (I even won a game!!!!), 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 1 Pocket all on the big table trying to prep for the IPT. Hopefully, I'll play decent by then.

The tournament went great and yes, things will be bigger and better next time! We're looking at a date in March, so mark you're calendars.

In the partners game, they wound up changing it to a Race to 13 and Josh and Jesse won 13-8 or 9. We had a couple of nice Ring Game Tournaments on Saturday night also. Would have been better if Felix hadn't gotten sick and Troy wasn't recouping from surgery, but by the spring hopefully they'll be in gear and waiting.......

Tammie

You are talking about Troy Jones right?

little ?Are u trying to mislead the readers? He is a very strong player. He plays pro speed.
I know how he plays if you are talking about him. I was just kidding. He is a very good player and subject to beat a lot of people, especially on the bar tables. We have all played together for a long time and I've watched beat several people who thought he couldn't play. I used to tell him all the time he had no clue how well he actually played. I just hope he don't read this and let it go to his head. HA HA!!! He did just recently have surgery and is still not up to par. But look out DCC. Sam
