on the opening break you must drive the cue ball and 2 others into a rail or its a foul?

so the match begins with a full rack, unless you know how to make a ball go in a pocket from there consistently, then what?

do you smash it just to save yourself from a foul? giving a well broke rack for your opponent to start running balls?

edit, looking at mjantti`s vid I see whats the strategy, ive never played against someone competitively

The overwhelming majority of 14.1 players do a saftey shot grazing the corner ball, driving two object balls to the cushions and sending the cue ball back up table.

I'd avoid smashing the rack on the opening break. Unless your sixth sense allows you to call a particular ball in a particular pocket, you'll be handing an open table to your opponent.

It's not that difficult to clip the rack, send two balls to the rail and get the cue ball safe. It just takes a bit of practice. Here's a decent example from Mika.
