I am looking for 5/16-14 threaded rod that will fit Schon shafts for Sure. I bought some online and it does not want to screw into my shafts. Seems big, maybe thread is a little fat i cant figure it out. The rod I bought will work when I tap somthing out at 5/16-14 and when I tap somthing with my tap it also fits a Schon butt. Is there somthing I can do to make my rod work? If not can I buy 3 feet of it form one of you.

thank you,
johnny

Actually Schon uses a modified 5/16 X 14. It is about .008 or so smaller than a normal 5/16 X 14. If you just need a pin for your lathe for polishing you can chase the threads on a normal 5/16 X 14 pin. If you force a normal pin into a Schon shaft it will open the threads in the shaft and from then on it will fit loosely on the Schon. Also, often if trying to force a 5/16 X 14 pin into a Schon shaft you will break the insert, if you want the insert to fit the larger pin then a tap should be used.

First, why do you need so much rod, why won't three inch pins work. I have access to them. You could also have a split dye made to chase the threads but I wouldn't recommend that because that could be lots of fun.

Thanks Michael,

I am making joint protectors. I just wanted 1ft lenghths so I can size them myself. Does chase the threads mean take it down on the lathe?
I would like to buy some pins if i cant fix my rod..

Seeing it's for joint protectors, chasing with a split dye might work. Send me a regular email and I will forward it to the proper people, I have about 90 screws left .298X14, I plan on using them in some cues, seeing I can make the proper inserts also. I know of two sources that can help, one has more screws than I do, the other is a mfg. depending on your order demand. I will help you any way I can.

I use the undersized pin for a drive mandrell for cleaning shafts, this way it's never to tight and fits all.

I believe he is refering to chasing threads by hand with a die in a holder. A split die can be tightened or loosened by a little screw across the split. If you squeeze the die a by tightening the adjustment screw it will cut a bit smaller diameter (major and minor). I do not know if it would cut 8 thou' undersized, I typically use them the other way, making slightly larger threads for various (non-cue) applications, bit it's worth a try imo. The die and holder might cost $25, buy a GOOD die (round, not hex, HSS, made in US). It is a lot of work, not my favorite task by any means. I find it difficult to hold threaded rod in a vice ... too tight and the threads are boogered, too loose and the thing turns.

Tap, Tap. Dave except the price, odd thread sizes, you have to have made special and pay the set up charge, It might be able to chase but not in one pass, I did however sent a pm giving options for getting more at the spec's required.

I have some 5/16-14 drives from both atlas and Chris H, and they both fit schon and the standard size, so i just use those for driving schon shafts. I'm guessing those were undercut to fit all.

I have ran into this   , and need to set up for It also. The standard 5/16X14 joint cap pins don't fit either. From the sound of this thread, there are not any prefab pins or rod available. Sure would be nice to have a few lenths of the undercut rod on hand for when this comes up, and a customer needs caps for one.

Chasing threads. lol ok I have tried this before with other aplications. Yes it is no fun. Thanks for all the input.

I have been down the joint protector road. You guys that know me may remember, my wife and I mass produced about 3000 sets of them about 6 years back, it's what started the whole cue making thing for me ... GOOD LUCK making money is all I will say.

I bought all the screws for my protectors (with the exception of uniloc types) from the same guy that manufactures the pins for Schon, so naturally they fit well and work for other 14t cues also. However, buying from him requires buying them in bags of 500 screws. I still have some of them in the shop, if you only need a few. PM me with how many you need and I will see what I can do.
