Yet another lathe question...

Here is my suggestion as someone who has modified hundreds of wood and metal lathes for cue work and built a lot more cue lathes than that. Let the cuemakers on here know what your present budget is for a pen lathe. Then we can think on what lathe you could be used to build pens with and also be able to maybe do some cue work on it with a few modifications. A wood lathe with 36" center would allow you to do sanding and wraps on cues with a few additional parts. But if your budget is $850 then you could get a good penmaking lathe that is already set up to do tips and ferrules on cues. Then you could add some things to that to do more in the future. So without knowing your budget we are all spinning our wheels.

Budget is about 130 for the lathe and maybe another 50-70 for the tooling for it and some pen stuff, (mandrels etc..)

I have found one that has a mt2 on the head and waiting to find out what is on the tail end. Seller says its a 40" lathe, but also waiting to see if it is 40 in over all length or if that is the c2c opening.

I only am thinking that what ever I buy now, will only be usuable in the future for cue work as a sander, maybe refinish, or with the addition of a steady rest, tip work..

Also after talking with another cue maker he said with a little work could use the wood lathe to make Joint protectors as well.

The main reason to get into pens or Jp's is to have a little (notice little) extra money come in to go towards an actual cue lathe for cues. I am a self employed IT guy, so with the economy like it is, Jobs in my area and feild are few and far between, so looking for other areas to bring in a little extra $ towards the hobby without hitting the budget to hard while at the same time learn a little about wood.

I know the actual turning of the wood on the wood lathe will not help me with a cue lathe, but knowing how the wood reacts to turning will. Something to point out, is I have never even turned on a lathe, let alone run one, so this is all a new area for me..

I have a grizzly metal lathe,a cuesmith deluxe,a small harbor freight 7x 12 or so,any of these will make pens,i have a general with 24 in extension and a old 40 in mastercraft,if that is your budget buy the best you can and add machinery fr there, most everybody on here started with what they could afford and bought more later on.Some of us already had wood working tools fr other proffessions, table saws, bandsaw, planer, floor sanders,im always buying stuff whether i need it or not

Hi. Can you afford the Headstock, tail stock with extension of a Taig?

You could fit them for full spinning, or cutting pens, be able to dial in just like a metal lathe.

You could get a cheap offset and even taper the pens.

After you could graduate to say a Hightower and still have a sanding lathe that you could also use to cut rings.

If you can't afford it, PM me. I have the stuff I just posted, your cost 0000000000000. All I would ask is I have a piece of Horn and after you learn, make me a pen outta it.

You would have to supply the wooden board and spend an hour putting it togeather, a good lesson in itself. I am going out of town for one or two days but will be back by Friday at latest.

Calm yourself down my friend, I think everyone that posted was just giving fair warning, Cue making is not cheap. A lathe cost is the minor cost. Oh, I have some exotic wood you can practice with.

Happy Cutting, it's an addiction.:)

What a very kind offer!

I also concur about calming down. Even if the answers you received don't exactly apply, there is really no reason to call them rude. No sense offending a responder and burning a bridge you might find helpful down the road.

Please don't yell at me now.... :(

I think thats about as good an offer ive seen,if he doesnt except pm me and i will make you a pen out of horn for 0000000 also, just for your kind offer,i have deer, elk, moose,it will be after Vegas May 5 to 17

That is a great offer! And sorry for coming off a little strong, it seemed different at the time, (I guess I didnt really come across all that clear in my first post)

I understand the costs are pretty high and the tools needed specific, but just starting out even learning, i didn't want to buy something so cheap that it would be worthless in any way down the road..

I have a couple ideas for the pens already to stay pool related. Lets just say Top barrel, 3 points, and bottom barrel to the nib, BEM... even a little wrap under the clip....

PM sent as well..

EDIT: 1am and didnt really say it, THANK YOU for that offer! generosity is still alive and well, and once again the members here have proven it! Thank you!@! That will help a TON!
