You Make The Call!

Last Wednesday while playing in a local tournament match, I broke the rack and hit the one ball square. The cue ball jumped up in the air and shattered one of the fluorescent lights. The nine ball was moving toward the end rail, but all of a sudden, the metal end cap from the light fell on the table and struck the nine ball thus deflecting it into the corner pocket. The cue ball came to a rest near the middle of the table. If the metal piece wouldn't have hit the nine ball, it would have NEVER made it to the pocket. You make the call! Should I have won the game or not?

LOL.

Dunno the rules about something like this. Sounds like a re-rack to me tho. Didn't the table need to be cleaned?

The tournament director ruled that we had to re-play the game and moved us to a different table. What upset me was the match was a race to 7 and I was up 6 games to 5 before I broke the light. After re-racking on a different table, I didn't make anything on the break and my opponent ran out. I was still thinking about what had happened and I dogged the nine on the next game to lose the match. To add insult to injury, he wanted me to replace the light. The old "You break it, you bought it," mentality. To top things off, the kid who cleaned up the glass fragments on the Simonis cloth used a vacuum and was rubbing the cloth with the plastic hose attachment. He ended up tearing about a one inch slit through the cloth and expected me to reimburse the pool hall for that as well! I gave them $5.00 for the light and told them they could take me to small claims court if they expected me to replace the cloth, as well. I don't think I will be welcomed back there, but oh well.

You gotta be kidding. Like its your fault the kid tore the table. I would not go back to that place even if they did let you play there again. Wow.

lucky game

Nine ball is a lucky game. Therefore, I believe you should have won the game because of the lucky carom.

If a ball hits anything that is not a part of the table it's a foul:

Rule 3.28
"Balls that strike or touch anything not a part of the table, such as the light fixture, chalk on the rails and cushion tops, etc., shall be considered jumped balls even though they might return to the bed of the table after contacting items which are not parts of the table proper"

The table should have been cleaned, the balls returned to their position with the nine ball spotted and you are on a foul. Your opponent has ball in hand. You got a break.

the damage was inadvertant and aside to game play. i hope that room is not the room you frequent. tell 'em to blow off.

Well, this one got me up off the sidelines.

The game should have been played over, as Ken said above, with the nine ball spotted, you having fouled, and your opponent having ball in hand. However, the tournament did the next best thing by having you re-play the game at a different table. You're not honestly thinking you should have won that game, are you? Would your conviction be the same had the situation been reversed and it was your opponent who was on the hill and this happened to him?

In my world, you would have offered to pay for the damages, the tournament director would have said, "No problem, big fella, it was an accident." And all would be right. It's a nice place, my little world! LOL

As a low-average player, I get a kick out of how some of the othewise pretty decent players break in 9 ball. If I'm playing someone who has an out-of-control, all-over-the place, power break, I don't worry that they'll break and run out, because the odds are in my favor that I'll get ball in hand after the cue ball goes careening across the room, knocking over anything in its path!!

Well I would have given you the game on artisrtic merit :)
but I believe it should be ruled outside interference and replayed.

Poolpuppy,

You and I are of the same world. We used to call that character. You don't see too much of it anymore do you? I'm in California too. I'm usually in Sacramento. Let me know if you're ever in town. I'd be happy to buy you a brew, water or whatever your into some day. Cheers.

I have been running tourneys for about 30 years, all sizes of prize funds and different games. Up until just a few years ago, there was really no rule to cover this situation. Since a similar event happened in one of my early tourneys, I came up with the rule: if any unintentional outside interference affects the game in progress , it will be a re-rack. I HAVE SEEN people walking by a pool game in progress and drop things on a table...a friend of a player bump the cue of a shooting player which causes a foul...in most bars this is not noticed and by the time the TD gets involved it is long past the actual problem. This rule usually covers these problems.

you make the call ajrack]

What rules do you run your tourny by? because how in texas express there is a rule if you are bumped by another player or person it is not a foul, reset ball and play.
