A friendly tournament player taught me a good practice technique. You ever practice by playing the ghost? For those of you who don't know what this means: Assume 9-ball: rack the balls...break the balls...take ball in hand...run the rack. Every rack you run gains you a point. If you miss a shot before finishing the rack, the ghost gets a point. Race to 5 or 7 or whatever. Good way to practice, and measure your speed.
This is also a good way to practice your agressive game. Obviously this is not much good for practicing a slower, more tactical game. So, it works well for 9-ball.
Its also a good game to practice your break. If your break sucks, you're going to have a hard time running the racks.
It is important that if you miss, you rack the balls again. That's your punishment. It really makes you want to run that rack...
The ghost usually beats me. What's your average score? My goal is to give the ghost 2 games on a race to 7, and beat him regularly. Next level: Play the ghost without ball in hand.
