This not the best photo of Yankee Doodles (Santa Monica) but you get the idea. I found out that there were better pool rooms in the area but this place was a perfect reason to quit shopping with the wife.:)

Pool is enjoyed by our troops. It's a universal game. Sergeant Albert Richmond, property book office noncommissioned officer in charge, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, U.S. Division said he wanted to arrange a large tournament before he left Iraq. This is a photo of one such tournament he organized in March 2010.

Pool is enjoyed by many on base, Richmond said; not just among U.S. Soldiers, but people of all nationalities.

“It’s popular, especially amongst the Ugandans, and the tables here at this MWR are among some of the best in Iraq,” Richmond said. “The tables are always full here, every weekend.”

Richmond said he was able to secure sponsors for the tournament, both on the base and off, including back in the United States.

“Fort Worth Billiards donated almost a thousand dollars worth of pool-related items to give away as prizes,” he said. “We have a minimum of 10 cues for the winners, some chalk holders and shirts as well.”

Richmond said the main attraction of playing pool while deployed has been the camaraderie and release it brings from the everyday pressure of being away from home.

“It definitely helps make the time go by … I love playing pool and organizing tournaments; the competition is great,” Richmond said.

At the Joint Base Balad-Iraq in, April 2009, the security force used for most of the routine, boring security jobs on base is the Ugandan Guards.

These are contract employees from Uganda. They are young folks who all formerly served in the Ugandan Army at some point. In order to make more money, they sign up to do security work for a contractor, and they come here to Iraq. The average pay is about $600 to $1,000 a month, which is a very good income considering the alternatives in employment in Africa. When it was more dangerous in Iraq, they were paid more, nearly double their current pay. They are not mercenaries, and are never sent out on missions.

Here's a picture of the Ugandan Guards playing pool on the base during their off time.

This is one of my favorite threads also. I don't get on here much anymore but I still enjoy this one.
I would like to see some more midwestern photos. Specifically Minneapolis if anyone has them.
