Women vs. Men

I asked a pro about pool and they said in 9-ball, the break is the big difference.

Ok, I understand that the strength may not be the same, but why if is only a matter of strength why are not the women competitive in 1-pocket?

I think it is a matter of numbers.

I think Karen Corr's performance at Joss events is proof that a woman can compete with the men. I don't buy the break argument one bit. If you can go the entire set without missing, you're going to win an overwhelming amount of the time no matter who you're playing.

With that said, it doesn't take an anthropologist to tell you that men are more likely to participate in competitive games & sports over women. We can sit here and argue nurture over nature but it's still going to leave us in the same place. More men play pool so you're looking at skewed results. But, don't be mistaken for one moment. Pool is not great athleticism. It doesn't require strength. There is nothing a man can do that a woman can't do.

By the specific sports that you list it is apparent that you have already recognised that in sports requiring strength physiological make up comes into it. This is, to a small extent, a factor In Pool. It is thought by some, that woman are not as strong or as consistent with their break as the same level male players.

In Chess, well they generally have a life.
In Checkers......see Chess
Iin horseshoes..........well they’re close.

Well..... men can sure play pocket pool better!

Really Jude?

I do.

Here is why: When you make 2-3 (or more) balls on the break, men are playing 6-7 balls verses 8-9 for women.

Its like Moneyball in baseball, its about facts and numbers. Given players of equal ability, the one that required less balls to be pocketed wins.

It common sense really.

Who on Earth is averaging 2-3 balls on the break? And, where are these facts and numbers you speak of?

I think it boils down to there being more men interested in the sport than women. I think a woman can be every bit as good as men in pool and there are several examples of some women who are.

Don't forget, it wasn't that long ago when a woman playing pool was frowned upon in the US. Give it time and the number of female pros could be more numerous than the males.

I don't know about any other sports but I will say something about pool.
To answer OP's question it depends on how much exposure women get. I mean how many women you see playing pool ? It also depends on the "image" of the game, when I go to a bowling alley I do see a lot of women playing it, but with pool its a different story.
It also depends on the mindset of people, I mean if you have a teenage daughter would you let her hang around in a pool room all the time ??
Other thing is most women who end up playing pool for a long time are the only ones who have somebody close in their family playing pool. Factors like marriage, kids, boyfriends / husbands gradually catch up. IMO most of the time girls are raised differently from boys and they have different priorities.
I always find this (http://www.allisonfisher.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58&Itemid=27) a good read.

I get what you're saying but I don't think that on average that the men are getting that many more balls than the women in on the break. I could be wrong, I don't have the numbers but I doubt anyone is averaging 2 balls per break.

I also don't think that power is the determining factor in a successful break.

barbox players with a magic rack.

Yeah, my opinion about break speed changes a bit when you switch to barbox 8ball. In that game, dropping balls and getting a big spread is huge and can only be successfully done with a 20+ mph break.

In 9ball on a 9-footer, especially if you can break from anywhere, the break speed matters so little. In fact, many players deliberately break soft whenever possible.

Would you be willing to bet that men do not average making more balls on the break than women?

I'm curious what would be used as the determinant for this. How could you prove that anyone averages 2 balls on the break?

Im betting that men make more balls on the break than women.

Do you want some of that action?

If we need to verify, I would be willing to use Accustats or TV coverage.

The only way would be by stats on a certain match, like they do with TAR matches. But that is also skewed since a table that you have the break figured out one, with a magic rack, will be different than a random tournament table.

Ken, you stated that men make 2-3 more balls than women on the break. That's a bit different than saying they just make more. Sure, they make more but I think your numbers are a bit off.
